Please join us for the opening reception of Reclaiming Home: Remembering the Topeka Bottoms on Friday, February 27th from 5 pm to 7 pm at Off-Site Art Space.

Reclaiming Home: Remembering the Topeka Bottoms is a project directed by Professor of Visual Art María Velasco, created with filmmaker and producer Matt Jacobson, oral historian Valerie Mendoza, and researcher and archivist Neill Esquibel-Kennedy, that addresses the mass displacement resulting from urban renewal in the Topeka Bottoms. The Bottoms extended over twenty blocks in downtown Topeka and was the heart of several diverse communities and businesses. In the 1950s and 1960s, over three thousand Topekans were forced to leave the Bottoms, resulting in a communal loss of home and place. Through oral histories, community mapping, and sculpture, Jacobson, Mendoza, Esquibel-Kennedy, and Velasco preserve and share the memories and histories of the Topeka Bottoms community.

Reclaiming Home: Remembering the Topeka Bottoms is on view at Off-Site from February 27th to March 27th. Stay tuned for more announcements on future programming surrounding this exhibition. we hope to see you soon!

Please join us for the opening reception of Ouch on Friday, February 13th from 5pm to 7pm at Off-Site Art Space.

Ouch is an exhibition by Barbara Lane Tharas consisting of paintings, found objects, letters, and zines that express queerness, fatness, family, and rejection. By experiencing this work, we find solidarity in the merged acts of following a visual narrative and reflecting on our own types of familial relationships. Community and empathy can ultimately resolve anything.

Ouch will feature an Open Mic and a Zine-Making Station where anyone can voice their thoughts, poems, or performances and express visual or literary interests to then distribute!
