What stories do our landscapes hold?

SOSAA recipient Tess Wilson is inviting Douglas County residents to explore the connections between art, nature, local history, and place through Ode to the Outdoors, a series of free community zine workshops!

Using archival materials from local libraries, museums, and historical societies, participants will create collages inspired by their own connections to the landscapes of Douglas County and Kansas.

The finished pieces will come together in a collaborative zine: a handheld gallery of artwork and stories created by our community.

We’ve heard from many of you that September was a busy month, so we’ve decided to postpone our One Square Meter Community Show & Tell (initially scheduled for October 3rd) to give everyone more time to participate!

This also creates an opportunity to observe how our local biodiversity changes throughout the seasons.

We’re tentatively planning to reschedule our community gathering for spring 2027. In the meantime, we encourage you to keep exploring, documenting, and sharing what you discover in your own square meter!

We will be accepting submissions on a rolling basis at tinyurl.com/onesquaremeter and will be sharing participants’ discoveries on our social media and website in the coming months.

We’re also looking for community partners! Are you involved with a school, nature club, community organization, or other group that might be interested in participating? We’d love to collaborate and bring One Square Meter to even more people. Please DM us if you’d like to get involved!

Join us for One Square Meter: Celebrating the Biodiversity of the Prairie!

Want to share what you discovered in your square meter? You have until Friday, September 25 to let us know you’d like to participate in our Community Show & Tell. Sign up at tinyurl.com/onesquaremeter.

Otherwise, all are welcome to simply come celebrate with us!

📍 Prairie Park Pavilion

We’ll gather over food and drinks, chat with local prairie enthusiasts and experts, and hear from community members about the life they discovered in their backyards, gardens, parks, and open spaces across Douglas County.

Participants will also be invited to pin their square meter on a giant map of Douglas County and receive a special wooden Douglas County badge created by local artist Matt Falvey.

Whether you documented one square meter yourself or you’re simply curious about the incredible biodiversity all around us, we’d love to see you there!

We are about halfway through September, and are excited to see what you all have been finding in your one square meter!

As a reminder, the deadline to sign up for our community Show & Tell is September 25. Then, join us on Saturday, October 3, from 1–3 p.m. at Prairie Park Pavilion to share what you’ve discovered and created in your one square meter.

Whether you’ve taken photographs, written poetry, painted, or found another creative way to document your square, we’d love to see it!

Please sign up by September 25 so we can plan for tables, setup, and refreshments. All ages are welcome!

Can’t make it in person? We’re also accepting digital submissions, which will be shared on our website and social media.

We counted at least 5 different types of pollinators on this Tall Goldenrod in our one square meter today!

What have you been finding so far? Remember, even if you aren’t able to participate in our community show and tell on October 3rd, you are still welcome to submit your discoveries digitally! We will share what you find on our social media and website.

Our September community project is officially underway!

Choose one square meter somewhere in Douglas County — in a prairie, park, garden, backyard, or other outdoor space — and spend some time looking closely at what lives there. Take photos, make drawings, keep a journal, write a poem, create a map, or document what you discover in whatever way inspires you.

One Square Meter is inspired by Chris Helzer Chris Helzer’s Square Meter Photography Project, where he documented more than 100 species in just one square meter of Nebraska prairie over the course of a year.

We’d love to see what you find! Share your project digitally, join us for our community show-and-tell, or both. Submit by September 25 to participate in the show-and-tell on October 3 from 1–3 p.m. at Prairie Park Pavilion.

There’s no right or wrong way to participate — just choose your square meter, spend some time with it, and see what you discover.

This project is made possible with support from the Douglas County Natural & Cultural Heritage Grant Program. And thank you to Lawrence Public Library for putting together a special Kansas nature shelf for the month to help you identify your finds!
