TUN gets put in lockup..we did the thing and played at lansing..no hyperbole to say it was one of the most amazing experiences TUN has had on this strange f***n trip we’re all on here..exciting? check..humbling? yep..engaging and warm and beautiful yet stark and conflicting and a little bleak? yes, all of this..
we had no idea if the guy hobbling up to us, leaning on his four-point cane to graciously shake our hands and thanks us and offer drinks and snacks was there for the slaughter of man..or tax evasion..but yesterday he was just our lovely and kind host and the house mc.
the massive viking carefully spreading a plastic tarp over everything to protect our equipment from the constant drizzle may have done unspeakable things to someone he loved in his previous life, or maybe he just evaded his taxes, but here he was just trying his best to accommodate his guests and keep their things dry and the show rolling..
the red goateed fellow air-drumming in the front row wore a large plastic cross around his neck..maybe he needed to, to feel like he was changing his life for the better because he was never leaving these walls again after a lifetime of perpetrating evil and terror on the outside..maybe he had been extra lazy with his taxes..but while every performer was pouring their hearts out on stage in a muggy, overcast prison yard filled with men that had been convicted for having been some kind of menace to the free world, he was entranced in the moment and willing smooth rolls and big fills at the end of every chorus ringing out over dozens of people for which this day is the highlight of their week..and dozens more that just enjoyed a couple weird bands playing their hearts out as background music to throwing a frisbee or doing pullups and burpees while they moved on with whatever fills the remaining years of their lives..
