New Partnership Strengthens the Heart of Downtown Laurens
A new chapter is unfolding on the Laurens Square as The Artist’s Coop and Main Street Laurens announce a strategic partnership designed to strengthen both organizations and deepen their shared commitment to community vitality.
Petra Manning Brooks, President of The Artist’s Coop, said the collaboration felt natural from the start. “This partnership is perfect because our two organizations have similar missions: to improve the quality of life for all in our community.” Her statement reflects a long-standing truth: both groups have spent years championing creativity, local business, and the cultural life of Laurens.
Founded in 2002, The Artist’s Coop has occupied several locations around the Square, most recently at 111 West Public Square. Last month, the Coop’s board learned that rent at that location would rise significantly, prompting a search for a more sustainable home.
That search led to a conversation with Brad Abercrombie, Executive Director of Main Street Laurens, and John Young, MSL Chairman. During a meeting with the Coop’s Executive Committee, the idea emerged to bring both organizations under one roof—combining resources, strengthening collaboration, and ensuring long‑term stability. Both boards unanimously approved the plan.
Preparations began immediately to relocate The Artist’s Coop to the Main Street Laurens office at 119 East Laurens Street, right on the Square. Abercrombie called the move “a win‑win for both organizations,” noting that the Coop needed an affordable, permanent location while MSL continues seeking new revenue sources after recent reductions in city funding.
A grand opening celebration is planned later this month to reintroduce The Artist’s Coop in its new home and to highlight the partnership that leaders say will benefit artists, businesses, and residents alike.
The collaboration marks a meaningful moment for downtown Laurens—one that blends creativity, community development, and shared vision under a single roof.
