My name is David Higgins and The Learned Breddrin is an individually run design studio that specializes in logos, flyers, event stationary and start-up business branding and development. During undergrad I signed up for a photojournalism class but a non-funcitoning dark room forced the professor to teach us photoshop instead and I've been hooked. I am trained as a lawyer and a journalist but I wou

ld always find myself creating posters and flyers for friends in my spare time. Since then I've created clean, elegant, creative designs for print and the web. I have produced everything from logos to wedding stationary and my clients are always satisfied with the work. When I design I try to create unique, catchy and clever designs that convey the client's message. If you like what you see in my portfolio, contact me so we can work together.

In 1579, a tall African man now known by the name of Yasuke arrived in Japan.

His height was roughly 6 feet, 2 inches and he had skin like charcoal historians said. The average height of a Japanese man in 1900 was 5 feet 2, so Yasuke would have towered over most Japanese people in the 16th Century,

In 1579, his arrival in Kyoto, the capital at the time, caused such a sensation that people climbed over one another to get a glimpse of him with some being crushed to death, according to historian Lawrence Winkler.

Much about him remains a mystery: it’s unconfirmed which country in Africa he hailed from, and there is no verifiable record of his life after 1582. But Yasuke was a real-life Black samurai who served under Oda Nobunaga, one of the most important feudal lords in Japanese history and a unifier of the country. Yasuke is now the subject of two films and a Netflix Anime series.

To celebrate the release of Black Panther: , we teamed up with Dope Black Art to create a series of posters from some of our favourite artists!

First up, Taj Francis with this vivid piece focused on Black Panther and Namor.

Taj Francis: “I think it's safe to say without a doubt that this franchise means a lot to me and to many others out there. It's resonated deeply with a lot of people far beyond being a movie and for a many reasons. You know that feeling , and that's the reason why we all do the work we do. So thanks to all the artist and creators making things that continue to resonate. Anyway, enough of my rambling. Thanks again to everyone involved.”

Megan Piphus Peace is making history as the first Black woman puppeteer on ‘Sesame Street.’ In an interview with the Washington Post, the 29-year-old said she has been a longtime lover of puppets, ever since she began watching ‘Sesame Street’ herself as a toddler. She eventually learned how to do ventriloquism herself, performing as a puppeteer while working a day job in real estate development. In 2021, she became a cast member for the show, maneuvering and voicing the character Gabrielle.

‘The more diversity we have, the more display of the possible opportunities we have for the next generation,’ Peace told the Washington Post. She continued, ‘Being the first Black female puppeteer on the show means opening doors for future performers, and persons of color anywhere in the television and entertainment space.’

Perhaps there should be a warning. Maybe something like: “These Ghanaian movie posters may have no relationship to the actual film you are about to see.” But that kinda ruins what these artists are trying to achieve. Their remit was simple: Get as many people to come and see this film no matt...
