Then Bethlehem Came to Life …
Over the past few weeks I've shared several memories that God has brought back to my heart. This week I'd love to share one that changed not only my life, but the lives of so many people in our community.
Several years ago, God placed a vision on my heart that eventually became "A Night in Bethlehem" at Halls Westside Baptist Church. It didn't take long before that vision became much bigger than one person. Jennifer, my mom, my dad, and so many church members and friends gave countless hours of their time, talents, and love to help bring that vision to life.
I'll never forget watching everything come together. Inside the church gym we built the inn, storefronts, tents, and the streets of Bethlehem. Church members made costumes for Mary, Joseph, the shepherds, the wise men, Roman soldiers, merchants, and townspeople. Others rehearsed their parts for weeks. Some prepared food that would be served from the marketplace, while others assembled toys and gifts to hand out from the village shops. Everywhere you looked, someone was serving. It truly became a church family working together for one purpose.
But what made that evening so unforgettable wasn't just what people saw—it was what they didn't know.
The program began in the church sanctuary with the first part of the Christmas story. Families took their seats expecting to watch a Christmas play. After Mary's encounter with the angel, Mary and Joseph quietly began their journey to Bethlehem by walking right through the congregation. Moments later, a Roman centurion announced that everyone must travel to Bethlehem for the census. One by one, families stood to their feet and followed Mary and Joseph through the church hallways, not realizing they were about to step into an experience they would never forget.
As they entered Bethlehem, the village came alive. Music filled the streets, lanterns glowed in the evening light, merchants welcomed visitors into their shops, food was served from the marketplace, children smiled as gifts were handed out, and even the crickets seemed to join the story as they chirped throughout the village. Families wandered through the streets, talking with merchants and taking in every detail as though they had stepped back more than two thousand years.
Then, just when everyone thought the evening was complete, the second part of the story quietly began. The crowds were led through Bethlehem until they arrived at the stable. There, beneath the glow of lantern light, the greatest story ever told unfolded before their eyes. The Savior had come.
Looking back now, I realize the greatest miracle wasn't that we built Bethlehem. The greatest miracle was watching an entire church family come together with one purpose—to help people experience the love of Jesus in a way they would never forget. God used that ministry to bless our community, but He also used it to shape my own heart.
Some stories are simply too important not to tell again.
Thank you for letting me share another story with you. See you next Tuesday night for another Christmas memory and another part of the story.
