π,Come see this during the Show!
Fascinating local history researched by one of our dedicated volunteers for a museum display you can see during the 48th Lathrop Antique Car, Tractor, & Engine Show! Many of us remember Betty Mae fondly.
It all started w/ the donation of a 1899 Stromberg-Carlson Magneto Wall phone 2 years ago. 1899 was the start of phone service in Lathrop.
Pross T Cross (yes Pross) bought the phone company in the late teens.
It was donated by Bob McCormick, grandson of Harry Bonham who owned the home years ago.
There're 2 photos of the house, one early during WWI that was printed in the Gayton & Harrington Mule Co. book that was published in 1915.
The other photo shows Bob and his sister Nancy playing in front of the house in the early 50's? There are several items on display of his father's photograph in the depot. Robert (Bob) McCormick was an professional photographer who worked for the Tulsa OK newspaper. Gerald Cross referred to him as his best student of photography.
There's a photo of Betty Mae Momyer, who went to work for P.T. Cross in 1937 right out of High School at the age of 16!
Betty in holding a "Candlestick" phone, taken in the Cross Law offices in the late 30's. Betty would retire from the Missouri Court of Appels.
In later years Gerald Cross, son of P.T. Cross, would refer to her as the Best Lawyer in Lathrop! Gerald would have taken the photo; he was an accomplished photographer as well. I'm sure he took the photo of the lineman as well.
There's a picture of Richard Kerr operating the new in 1917 Switchboard. He helped maintain the entire system for years working for Pross. He was hired away by AT&T after they heard of the wonder kid in Lathrop that had fixed a problem none of their engineers could figure out ! He's in his 90's now & still a fount of knowledge about Lathrop.
