In this country constitutional rights are meant to be protections for EVERYONE regardless of their status or citizenship. The rights to due process, to challenge unlawful detention, and to be free from imprisonment without cause are fundamental principles of justice. Today, those principles are at stake in the case of Alfredo Santiago - a founding member of our Vegas May Day Action Committee.

Alfredo has now spent MONTHS in immigration detention after being arrested by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, held without charges, and subsequently transferred to I.C.E. custody. He is being deprived of liberty in a flagrant erosion of rights that belong to all people.

For more than a decade, Alfredo has dedicated countless hours of his life in service of the Southern Nevada community. He is a founding member of the Vegas May Day Action Committee and Comunidad Migrante, he is a trained street medic, and he has been a tireless organizer, advocate, and volunteer committed to labor rights and union organizing, immigrant rights, social justice, and mutual aid.

Throughout the years, Alfredo has been involved with Food Not Bombs/Comida No Bombas, the Las Vegas Street Medics, Solidarity Not Charity, Yo Soy 132 Las Vegas, Arriba Las Vegas Worker Center, Make the Road Nevada, and numerous other community organizations & projects. He has fed the hungry, supported families in crisis, advocated for immigrant communities, and shown unwavering solidarity with people facing hardships and injustices. He’s a wonderful, kind, peaceful person and a great friend to many. Those who know Alfredo know him not as a danger to the community, but as someone who has spent years strengthening it.

Now our community has an opportunity to stand with him.

We urge everyone to please sign the petition created by Arriba Worker Center calling for Alfredo's release. Furthermore, we would like to gather as many folks as possible to show up for his immigration court hearing tomorrow. Signs will be provided on site.
