To live in a time of reversal is to feel the floor tilt, the sky shift, the ordinary bearings go strange. The planet has done this before. Around 42,000 years ago, the poles came close to swapping places in an event known as the Laschamp Excursion. Although the name sounds like a hike in the French countryside; in truth it was a planetary unravelling. The alien climate may have prompted dramatic changes in early human behavior—including the emergence of symbolic rock art.

This exhibition brings together works from the CouperRuss collection alongside contemporary artists with Las Vegas connections who work in that tilted space. Their reversals aren’t tricks of the eye so much as ways of thinking—flips, mirrors, distortions that unsettle what we take for granted. Here, turning an image upside down can make it more legible. And sometimes, the most revealing view is the one we get when “the right way up” is suspended, and the world shows us another face.Viewings by appointment: August 22 - October 4, 2025

BRICK IS RED at CouperRuss January 26 - February 23, 2025

Brick is Red is borrowed from the title of the closing track of The Pixies’ iconic 1988 album . The phrase “brick is red”—often associated with sturdiness, strength, and reliability—stands in stark contrast to the cryptic imagery in the song’s lyrics. This juxtaposition reflects the expansive scope of the color red and its enduring presence in art throughout history.
Red holds a uniquely evocative place, not only due to its vivid hue but also because of its profound symbolism, encompassing themes of death, love, power, and revolution. These associations span diverse cultures and resonate deeply on both a symbolic and psychological level. The artworks featured in this exhibition range from a physical ceramic brick, to depictions of the devil’s iconic red and utilitarian objects such as the Swiss Army knife.

Featured artists: Helm Ruifrok, Jerry Misko, Jono Rotman, Joseph Valencia, JK Russ, Matthew Couper, Paul Maseyk, Peter Ireland, Ripper Jordan, R.A. Miller, Tony de Lautour, Unidentified Mexican artists, Victor Berezovsky, Victorinox, Wendy Kveck, W.D. Hammond.

From 2005 to 2009, the Las Vegas-based art collective Ripper Jordan—made up of James Hough, David Ryan, and Sean Slattery—crafted high-volume, low-cost art pieces with a tongue-in-cheek approach to art. Exhibiting at local events from First Friday to high-end galleries alike, Ripper Jordan captured the absurdities of high art in ways that felt both accessible and subversive. Now, in a world increasingly driven by algorithmic predictions, Ripper Jordan’s playful take on art markets and consumer culture feels more relevant than ever. The exhibition features 169 available-to-purchase artworks from the Ripper Jordan archive alongside new works by the individual artists.
