Jackie and Shadow really do have a way of making even the messiest moments in the nest feel strangely warm. 🦅

Shadow just brought back another fish, dropping it near the middle of the nest while the chicks still sprawled on the branches, looking utterly exhausted after a long day. Sandy barely lifted her head at first, her eyes half-closed like a teenager unwilling to get out of bed, while Luna curled deeper in the nest, still trying to rest despite any movement around her. Jackie stood further towards the edge of the nest, her feathers fluttering slightly in the breeze, quietly observing everything while Shadow approached the food. The fish seemed momentarily forgotten as the chicks appeared more concerned with staying comfortable than rushing toward another meal. 😅

Particularly noteworthy lately is the growing trust in the nest. The chicks no longer react so hastily whenever their parents land nearby. Sandy and Luna seemed safe enough to remain calm even when food arrived, almost knowing that eventually there would be enough for everyone. Jackie and Shadow also seemed calmer around them. Less close supervision, less constant adjustments, and more space for the eaglets to roam freely throughout the day at their own pace.

And honestly, that changing rhythm is part of what makes this stage so moving to watch. Sandy and Luna are still young birds in many ways, sleeping awkwardly piled on top of each other and looking messy all the time, but gradually the nest is beginning to resemble a home more than a nursery, preparing the two young eaglets for independence. Jackie and Shadow still quietly steer things from the background, but the eaglets are slowly learning to be independent in this space. 🥹

The entire nest seemed to tighten for a moment when the movement appeared beneath Jackie’s feet. Not because of panic, but because every eagle in the family instantly noticed it. Curled between the sticks in the center of the nest was a striped snake, freshly brought in and still intact enough to hold everyone’s attention. Jackie lowered her head immediately, focused and deliberate, while Shadow stayed upright nearby, scanning the surroundings without drifting too far from the family. Even resting beside them, Luna kept one eye open toward the prey.

Sandy reacted first. The young eaglet lifted slightly from the nest bowl and leaned toward the snake with that awkward mix of confidence and uncertainty young raptors often have. There was no feeding frenzy and no dramatic struggle. Instead, the moment unfolded slowly, almost carefully. Jackie nudged the snake with the tip of her beak several times, testing it before beginning to work at it piece by piece. Sandy watched every movement closely, studying where Jackie pulled, how she positioned her feet, and how she controlled the prey without wasting motion. These are the quiet lessons that matter now. At this stage, the eaglets are no longer simply waiting to be fed. They are learning what prey looks like, how it smells, and how an adult eagle handles it before eating.

What made the scene feel important was how calm the family remained throughout it. Months ago, Sandy and Luna were tiny gray nestlings hidden beneath Jackie’s feathers. Now they sit beside their parents observing live prey at close range, absorbing behavior that cannot be taught any other way. Jackie and Shadow no longer spend every hour shielding the eaglets from the world. Little by little, they are introducing them to it.

For a few quiet minutes, the entire mood of the nest changed because Jackie stopped acting like a hunter and started acting more like a patient teacher. While one eaglet rested low in the nest bowl, Jackie stood beside it without urgency, watching every small movement as the youngster investigated a strange green piece of prey near its feet. Sandy leaned in first, cautious but curious, nudging it carefully with the tip of her beak before pulling back again.

Jackie never rushed the interaction. That was the interesting part. Adult bald eagles often control feeding moments quickly and efficiently, especially when food arrives fresh, but this felt different. Jackie remained close enough to supervise while allowing Sandy space to figure things out independently. The eaglet lowered her head several times, testing texture and scent the same way young raptors begin learning what belongs in the category of food and what does not.

Luna stayed farther back and mostly still, conserving energy while quietly observing the entire exchange from the shadows of the nest. The difference between the siblings continues to become more noticeable each day. Sandy tends to approach unfamiliar situations first, while Luna watches longer before committing herself.

What stood out most was Jackie’s posture throughout the moment. She kept her body angled protectively toward the eaglet instead of toward the open forest around Big Bear Lake. Even while Sandy experimented clumsily with the object beneath her beak, Jackie never looked impatient.

Parenting in this nest has slowly shifted away from constant feeding and into something more subtle now — supervision, trust, and space to practice. Sandy may not have fully understood what she was examining yet, but Jackie clearly understood something important: young eagles do not become independent all at once. It happens through dozens of quiet little moments exactly like this one.

The nest was unusually quiet when Sandy suddenly stood up and walked straight toward the center of the sticks, locking onto the remains of an earlier meal. Luna stayed curled low nearby, barely moving except for a slow turn of the head to follow every step. There was no Jackie beside them and no Shadow hovering overhead in that moment. For the first time in a while, the nest felt like it belonged mostly to the eaglets themselves.

Sandy approached the prey carefully, lowering her head several times before touching it with the tip of her beak. The movements were slower than the confident feeding behavior Jackie usually shows, but that hesitation is part of the learning process now. Luna watched from the side without trying to compete, almost as if she already understood Sandy needed the practice more. Over the last several days, moments like this have become more common around the Big Bear nest. Jackie and Shadow are still providing food and protection, but they are no longer controlling every interaction inside the nest. Sandy and Luna are being pushed gently toward independence, one awkward feeding attempt at a time.

What made this moment stand out was the contrast between the two siblings. Sandy looked restless and determined, shifting position repeatedly while testing the prey and the loose sticks beneath her feet. Luna remained calmer, conserving energy while quietly observing everything from a safer spot. Different personalities are becoming easier to recognize now. But despite those differences, both eaglets still paused often to glance outward toward the trees, instinctively aware that even while they practice growing up, the safety of Jackie and Shadow is never very far away.

The entire mood between Jackie and Shadow changed the moment the black crow crossed too close to the nest.

Both adult eagles had been perched quietly along the pine branches beside the nest during the late afternoon light. Jackie remained higher on the outer branch, scanning across the open air while Shadow stayed lower near the nest itself. For several calm minutes, neither bird moved much beyond small turns of their heads and occasional adjustments of their talons against the bark.

Then a crow suddenly appeared above the branches, flying directly across their line of sight. Jackie reacted first. Her head snapped upward immediately, beak slightly open as she tracked the movement overhead. A second later, Shadow shifted too, lifting his gaze toward the dark bird passing near the territory.

The crow never landed, but it stayed close enough to change the entire atmosphere around the nest. Jackie straightened higher on the branch while keeping her eyes fixed on the bird’s flight path through the trees.

Shadow remained lower but alert, watching from beneath her position as the crow continued moving across the edge of their airspace. Neither eagle launched after it right away. Instead, both held position carefully, studying every movement as if deciding whether the bird posed an actual threat near the nest.

For several tense seconds, the peaceful scene became something different — not chaotic, not aggressive, but watchful. The crow eventually continued past the tree line, disappearing farther into the fading light, yet Jackie and Shadow stayed alert long after it was gone. Moments like this quietly reveal how little escapes the attention of eagle parents. Even while resting beside the nest, their focus never truly leaves the sky around their young.

The feeding began quietly… but within seconds, both Sandy and Luna were completely focused on Jackie’s every movement.

Jackie stepped carefully into the center of the nest carrying fresh food beneath her talons while both eaglets immediately shifted toward her. Sandy reacted first, lifting higher from the bedding and stretching forward with quick, eager movements.

Luna stayed slightly behind at first, watching closely from the darker side of the nest before slowly moving closer beside her sibling. Jackie lowered her head and began tearing small pieces carefully while keeping her body positioned protectively over the food. The eaglets stayed pressed tightly together in front of her, their eyes following every pull of Jackie’s beak.

What stood out most was how different the two young birds handled the moment. Sandy reached upward repeatedly, impatient and determined to be first each time Jackie lowered food toward them. Luna moved more cautiously, waiting for openings before leaning in beside the larger sibling.

At one point, Jackie paused between bites and looked down at both eaglets before continuing again, almost balancing the feeding between them. Neither eaglet backed away. Even when Sandy pushed forward more aggressively, Luna stayed close, refusing to lose position near Jackie’s feet.

As the feeding continued, the nest became filled with small movements instead of chaos — shifting talons against the sticks, quick head turns, tiny wing adjustments, and the constant upward focus of two growing eaglets depending completely on Jackie’s next motion.

The scene no longer looked like helpless chicks waiting quietly beneath their parents. Sandy and Luna now moved with confidence, instinct, and growing strength, while Jackie remained at the center of it all, patient enough to feed them both one careful piece at a time.

Something changed in the nest the second Shadow dropped in with food. The calm afternoon over Big Bear Lake instantly turned into movement, noise, and scrambling talons as both Sandy and Luna reacted before the meal even touched the branches beneath them. For a brief moment, it looked less like a feeding and more like two growing eaglets realizing just how fast life in the nest is starting to move now.

Shadow arrived carrying fresh prey clutched tightly in his talons, wings spread wide as he balanced himself against the edge of the nest. The landing was heavy enough to shake loose several dry sticks near the center. Sandy immediately pushed upright from a resting position while Luna turned sharply toward the food, both eaglets lowering their bodies and stretching forward at nearly the same time.

Shadow stayed standing over the meal for several seconds instead of feeding right away. His head moved constantly between the eaglets and the surrounding treeline, maintaining a guarded posture while gripping the prey beneath him. The eaglets responded differently to the tension. Sandy stayed low and cautious, inching closer in short movements, while Luna appeared bolder, stepping forward first and keeping attention fixed on the food. Wind swept through the nest hard enough to lift loose down feathers around their backs while the lake below remained perfectly still in the afternoon light.

What stood out most was how quickly the balance inside the nest shifted once food appeared. Only minutes earlier the eaglets had been quiet and scattered across the branches. Now every movement carried urgency.

Shadow never lost control of the situation, but the interaction revealed how rapidly Sandy and Luna are changing. Their instincts are sharpening, their confidence is growing, and each feeding is becoming less about waiting to be cared for and more about learning how to compete, react, and survive beside one another.
