The gear i use when playing with - all stuff you have seen modded earlier. it all sits in this box on a keyboard stand. The midi stuff is controlled by the guitar.

There is also an wireless optical theremin that I neglected to mention, which i will give you an update on later. It's in a toy helicopter controller and uses bluetooth to send midi to an iphone 6s.

Seacat and Balloonicorn are mythical creatures of endless suffering. Seacat has to live in water, being half fish, but hates it, being a car.
Balloonicorn is constantly surrounded by balloons which startle her when popped by the horn. Also she's a cop for some reason. and a damn good one.

When you have to wiggle it to make it work, chances are there's a broken solder joint that you can re-flow as they say.
Make sure you add new solder. Most importantly, make sure the pin and the pad are both hot enough to melt the solder. You can't put hot solder on cold parts, it won't stick.

5g lab work - the long extensive boot process of this scary old spectrum analyzer as it pops and clatters away aligning mysterious parts inside.

'xtal' stands for crystal. quartz crystals, just like the psychic healing kind, do have magical properties. When excited by electricity, they can vibrate at very precise frequencies. This accuracy lets us use exact frequencies for radio data. In this case, we can compare internal known frequencies to analyze and display where in the spectrum of frequencies there are spikes of higher energy. These 'xtals' are in everything modern and electronic that uses radio waves or keeps time.

The thick band of noise we see once booted is the cosmic background radiation of the universe, left over from the big bang.

old 5g spectrum analyzer, from before it was called 5g. communications in the mm wave spectrum arn't a new thing, they are just new to cell phone consumers. Not to be confused with 5g wifi, that refers to 5ghz. There is also a variant of what the cell phone companies are calling 5g which is in this range, it's referred to as 'sub-6.' This is microwave, but not the tiny 'millimeter wave' action of 28ghz where we are playing around. This older machine can handle that kind of high frequency, and non-consumer tech has existed taking advantage of this band since the 90s. That said, it's so exotic that we have to pay thousands to rent even this older unit. Periodically there is a chorus of clicking relays as it self calibrates and aligns filters inside. It's pretty magical. Holler if you want to see me boot it to hear and see this mysterious process.
