Jordan LaMothe seeks to create aesthetically intriguing blades, drawing inspiration from a variety of historical designs from regions all across the world. Growing up on a farm in rural New York State taught Mr. LaMothe the importance of a good knife, both in the field and in the kitchen, and he maintains that attention to functional design in all his current work, from chef knives to swords. LaMothe has been a member of the American Bladesmith Society since 2013, and he earned his Master Smith ranking in 2021. In 2022, he spent nine months in Rajasthan, India on a Fulbright grant, studying historical Indian swords and daggers and learning the koftgari wire overlay technique from skilled craftspeople there. In addition to being a full-time knife-maker, he regularly teaches knife-making workshops at several schools around the country in an effort to share his passion and knowledge of the craft with the next generation of knife-makers.

Mechanisms are the key to my knives. Each knife is built and created around the mechanism. The mechanisms I use in my knives are unique in the knife making world. At last count I have 29 different mechanisms including variations of a theme.

I am a machinist by trade first, knife-maker by heart second. Special care to fit and finish, tolerances and detail are things I take pride in. I am constantly trying to improve and simplify giving equal weight to form and function.

I make all my knives and every part of each knife with the exception of ball bearings and some coil springs. All my knives are made by my hands alone using manually operated hand tools and machinery. I have no CNC equipment whatsoever.

People usually tell me that until they handle and operate my knives, they cannot be truly appreciated

Bertie started making knives as a hobby in 1979, his final year at school. He is a member of the Knife-makers Guild of Southern Africa, since 1982 and served as Chairman (1997 to 1999.) Member of the Italian Knifemaker Guild. (Corporazione Italiana Coltellinai – CIC) since 2000 and exhibits at their Milan show annually.

He started forging his own Damascus in 1991 and is the first producer of Stainless Steel Damascus in South Africa, having made his first stainless steel Damascus in 1997.He established an engineering company, Batavia Eng. in 1988, (having studied mechanical engineering), manufacturing belt grinders and contact wheels. This business was downsized in 2000 so that Bertie could spend more time on his passion for knifemaking. The contact wheels persisted due to strong demand and eventually in June 2006 this came to an end in favor of full time knifemaking.

I was born in 1981 in Palermo (Sicily, IT), and studied at the Faculty of Architecture in Florence (Tuscany, IT), where I currently live and work.

In 2018, I designed my first knife. I immediately realized that I was drawn to the minutiae, the details, how the slightest variation of a curve could change the perception of the whole and provoke an emotional response. Since then, I have been searching for that hidden magic among the balance of forms. A magic that can also be found in the simplicity of a mechanism or in the shine of a finish.

Over the years, I have discovered a subtle thread that connects the worlds of art, architecture, visual communication, and knife design. It is in this space of fascinating cross pollinations that I have found the inspiration for my personal research. Today, I work on the connection between the classical and the contemporary, and in my designs, I seek a synthesis between elements of seemingly distant worlds, which, like everything that surrounds us, only make sense when they coalesce.
