The older I get, the more I realize that everyone is carrying something. Some burdens are visible, but many are not. Grief. Heartbreak. Trauma. Illness. Financial stress. Childhood wounds. Quiet disappointments. Things people rarely talk about, yet somehow keep carrying while showing up each day.
It's easy to look at someone's life from the outside and think we know what they should have done. But we rarely know the full story. We don't know what they've survived, what they've lost, or what they're doing their best to heal from.
And if we're honest, none of us are perfect. We've all made mistakes. We've all had seasons where we struggled, stumbled, or needed a little grace from someone else.
That's why I've come to believe that a little less judgment and a little more compassion can go a long way. Not because every choice people make is right, but because being human is complicated. Most of us are doing the best we can with what we know and what we've been through.
You don't have to agree with someone's choices to treat them with kindness. You don't have to understand every decision to remember there's a person behind it.
Life has a way of reminding us that we're all more alike than we think. So before we rush to judge, maybe it's worth pausing and remembering that we, too, have needed understanding at different points in our lives.
And when our own difficult moments come, chances are we won't be hoping for judgment.
We'll be hoping for compassion.
