One of the greatest joys of this work is placing a drum in the hands of a child.

Recently I had the honor of gathering with students and families through the FYI+ After School Program. Together we made drums. We shared stories. We learned what the drum has always known, that rhythm connects us to one another and to the earth beneath our feet.

Watching a child hear the voice of a drum they made with their own hands is something I will never take for granted.

The drum teaches us to listen. To slow down. To remember that we belong to something larger than ourselves.

That is a teaching worth passing on.

To every family, every child, and everyone who made this gathering possible, thank you. It was an honor to be in circle with you.

The drum has been my teacher for a long time.

Not because I asked it to be. Because I kept showing up.

Over the years, I have learned that rhythm is not just something we make. It is something we come back to. Again and again, in ceremony, in circle, in the ordinary moments between.

Swipe through what the drum has taught me. And at the end, I have a question for you.

This is what it looks like when a circle completes itself.

Every person in this room arrived carrying something.

A question.
A longing.
A quiet hope for what might unfold.

And then they began the work of making.

With their hands.
With their attention.
With their presence woven into every step.

By the time this photo was taken, something had shifted.

Not because a drum had been completed.

But because each person had given themselves fully to the process.

That is the gift of this work.

The drum is important.

But so is the listening.
The patience.
The willingness to trust what unfolds along the way.

The circle remains open.

Look at this table.

Different paths. Different stories. Different places we each came from.

And yet here we are, drawn back to the same room, the same laughter, the same ease that only comes when you are with people who know you.

I did not plan this circle. None of us did.

It found us.

That is the thing about the people who are truly meant to walk alongside you. You do not have to force it. You do not have to hold it together.

It holds itself.

Some of the deepest medicine I have ever received did not come from ceremony.

It came from a table like this one.

Full cups.
Open hearts.
And nowhere else any of us needed to be.

Think of the circle that found you. Who came to mind?

The drum does not ask for perfection.

It asks for presence.

I have sat with people at every stage of life, every kind of grief, every shade of joy. And when hands meet hide and wood and the slow work of making begins, something shifts.

Not loudly. Not all at once.

Quietly. The way truth usually arrives.

What you make with your hands carries what you brought into the room.

Your prayer.
Your patience.
Your willingness to return to something real.

That is why this work matters.

Swipe through and sit with it for a moment.

There is a quiet kind of belonging that happens in circle.

Not because everyone arrives the same way,
but because each person brings something real.

A breath.
A story.
A rhythm.
A willingness to be present.

The drum helps us meet there.

This June, we gather again.

Saturday, June 6
10:00 AM to 12:00 PM
UUC, Las Cruces
You are welcome in the circle.

Join us on June 6 and bring your presence.

Some months ask us to move.

Some months ask us to pause.

May seemed to ask for both.

There were moments of travel, gathering, creating, and returning. And through each one, I was reminded that rhythm is not something we only find in the drum.

It is in the way we come back to one another.
In the stories that open slowly.
In the hands that make.
In the quiet knowing that each season carries its own teaching.

I am grateful for what May offered, and for the rhythm that continues into June.

June is near, and the rhythm continues.

Each circle gives us a place to slow down, listen, create, and return to what matters.

Whether we are making with our hands, sitting with the drum, or sharing quiet moments in community, there is something steady that carries us.

Blessings

You are welcome to come create and sit in circle with us.
