Currently showing at the Las Cruces Museum of Art is the All City High Schools Senior Art show; art by local high school students. This first image is titled “Mothers,” which is curious, as there are no women in the piece. It took Best in Show. Some of the pieces are dark and seemingly trauma-based, but I guess that’s the world for many teens. There is a lot of talent here and the show is worth seeing. It runs through May 4th.

Cotton plant, watercolor. We grow a lot of cotton here in southern New Mexico. Archeological digs in New Mexico have uncovered evidence of cotton being grown as early as 300 BC.

Old San Miguel Mission Church in Socorro, New Mexico. Watercolor. San Miguel de Socorro is a church built on the ruins of the old Nuestra Señora de Socorro Mission, which was constructed in 1627. It was destroyed during the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and a portion of the original adobe wall is still visible.

This is deemed to be the oldest Catholic Church in the US. The construction of the existing church was likely completed in 1821. Local legend has it that during an Apache raid, an angel appeared and scared the invaders. Parishioners thus decided to name the church after St. Michael, the archangel who supposedly saved the village.
