Congrats to my friend Boots Riley on his new film “I LOVE BOOSTERS” (written and directed) starring Demi Moore! 🎬🔥

Most know Boots as the fearless frontman of The Coup from Oakland — one of the most original voices in music and film. Seeing this announcement sent me back into the archives to dig up our co-production together: the original track “SUPERFLY” for THQ’s Superfly MX Moto video game.

That project was a blast — writing at his Oakland studio, then heading to Hyde Street Studios (where legends like Hendrix, The Dead, Tupac, CSNY, and Green Day recorded) to produce the title track with a full funk band and the amazing Pam The Funktress.
Those were the early days of Games x Music — and it’s great to see how far the culture has come. 👊

Woke up to a great note this morning from Bob Green of the band Grassy Knoll https://lnkd.in/gcirhTCr
Turns out he came across an old letter I’d written thanking him for his amazing work on the EA SPORTS game we did back in 1999.
Among all the incredible soundtracks that started flowing into EA SPORTS during that era — and the hundreds I’d be part of over the years — this one still stands out.
Not just because we somehow pulled off a “Metallica-almost-in-trade” deal 😄
but because it captured a rare moment where gaming and groundbreaking music truly collided.
Trailer with Metallica's "FUEL"

🎧 Highlights from that soundtrack:
• Mix Master Mike’s first all-original, no-sample track
• A killer new cut from Alex Skolnick (Testament)
• A vintage Link Wray track from The Green Hornet
• Rare Primus + a remixed Meat Beat Manifesto from Jack Dangers
• Great stuff from Jim Thomas / The Mermen
• Texas rockabilly fire from Rev Horton Heat
• And a few early-day electronica / breakbeat gems that still hold up today
It was pure creative chaos — and an early glimpse of where music + gaming were headed.
Cheers,
Randy
