6 U.S. Servicemembers on the USS Abraham Lincoln have tried to jump off the ship due to horrific conditions during the ship’s extended deployment in the Middle East.
Families of sailors aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln say crew members have become so desperate during an extended Middle East deployment that some have tried to jump overboard, according to reporting from The Military Times and The Independent.
The carrier, with roughly 5,000 sailors and Marines aboard, deployed last November and was expected home in May. Instead, the deployment was extended with no return date as the ship supports operations in the war with Iran. One wife says her husband, a 13 year Navy veteran, is now on medical hold after attempting to jump from the ship. Another says her husband physically stopped a shipmate from going over the side.
Family members confronted Acting Navy Secretary Hung Cao at a town hall last week, raising concerns about mental health, food shortages, water contamination, and deck safety. One wife reportedly told officials her husband messaged her saying he hoped he wouldn't wake up the next day.
Cao told families the USS Theodore Roosevelt is being prepared to relieve the Lincoln but gave no date. The Navy previously dismissed reports of food shortages aboard the Lincoln and USS Tripoli as false. Officials say the Lincoln will shift its home port to Bremerton, Washington after this deployment, with December 31 floated as a target for a return timeline.
