Our Story

Dance Expressions Performing Arts Studio was established in 1978 by Mrs. Elizabeth Kirkpatrick and her daughter Ms. Cheryl Kirkpatrick a former professional dancer in order to provide the community with high quality pre-professional dance and performing arts education at an affordable price. Ms. Cheryl Kirkpatrick holds a B.A. Degree and is a state-certified dance instructor. She was trained in numerous genres of dance since the age of two and as a young adult continued her studies by attending classes and workshops with internationally known dance masters- including Austin on Tap under the direction of Ms. Debbie Bray (a national touring tap company), flamenco masters Jose Greco, Nana Lorca, director of Ballet Nacional de Espana, Pilar Lopez of Mexico City and Maria Benitez who established the Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts in Santa Fe. Ms. Kirkpatrick served as the Dean of Dance at the VMT School of Communications and Fine Arts for 17 years before retiring to dedicate her talents exclusively to Dance Expressions.Our studio offers beginner through pre-professional classes in classical ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip-hop, and world dance. Our students classical ballet training consists of technique from the Vaganova Method and The French School of classical dance. Our studio encourages young dancers to explore an assortment of dance styles in order to find what style works best for them, as well as to learn about different cultures and increase their knowledge in multiple fields of dance which can lead to more successful auditions at a professional level. Students from Dance Expressions have been accepted into programs at top universities and professional schools including The University of Texas Dance Program, Texas Christian University, Texas Woman’s University, Houston Ballet Academy, The Joffrey Ballet School, The Kirov Academy, The American Dance and Musical Theatre in New York City and Ballet Intensive Moscow. Many of our students have attended nationally recognized dance competitions garnering outstanding gold, silver, and bronze medals, as well as scholarships and awards. Our teachers are all former dancers and certified to teach dance at multiple levels including advanced and professional. They maintain their dance education at our studio and attend national dance conventions and competitions in order to offer our dancers the latest choreographies and dance techniques as well as address our dancers’ needs for an up to date competitive dance education. Our studio also offers modeling classes and photoshoots with Neon Pearl Fashion and Photography, at no additional cost to parents-including a free complementary headshot (available in digital form) for audition purposes. Our recitals are praised by parents and dance aficionados for their refinement and elegance as well as their elaborate production level including our use of lighting, projections, props, and costumes.
