Oil Derek with Twain | “A Gift A Dream”

We cut this field recording with Oil Derek in a cabin buried somewhere in the woods of North Carolina, the whole place lit by firelight and little else. Outside, the trees stood black and listening. Inside, Mat “Twain” Johnson brought something almost sacred into the room. A sound that seemed less played than summoned. An almost perfect harmony between the both of them.

Sheila Kay Adams | “A Sailor Being Tired”

Generation to generation, folk songs like this were used to pass down stories from long ago. Teaching lessons, heeding warnings, and keeping pieces of history alive. Over time, the stories would change with the way each person told them, carrying something from one generation into the next. Before endless scrolling and AI-generated videos took over our attention, tales like these kept alive the simple whimsy of being human.

Sheila Kay Adams is a seventh-generation ballad singer, storyteller, and musician from S***m Laurel in Madison County, North Carolina. She learned the art of ballad singing directly from elder tradition-bearers in her community, continuing a tradition that has been passed down through generations of Appalachian families.
