A new name for a familiar place, Fly Around kicks off the festival weekend with a show , the heartbeat of the town of Lansing. Formerly known as Old Orchard Creek General Store, Shelby and her crew keep the town caffeinated and connected. The cafe bounced back after taking significant damage during Helene’s flooding, including adding a new brunch and food menu last fall in addition to their already excellent drinks, tea, beer and wine.
Our show Friday night at Lansing Cafe is in celebration of this well loved community space, and the role it plays in keeping our town so close. As a bonus, we’re moving the stage outside this year, to accommodate more folks. Doors will open at 6 pm, with the music kicking off at 7 with an all female led lineup of , and !

Jon Camp is a fingerstyle guitarist and composer based out of the Washington, DC region. Jon blends melody, twang, and drone into a cohesive whole that is exploratory without forsaking the hook. Jon’s most recent record, Proceed (Centripetal Force Records), is a full-band affair that is electric, expansive, and emotionally muscular, channeling a spirit of forward motion amidst the weight of memory and uncertainty. Reviewing the album, Aquarium Drunkard said, “Not just formally impressive, Proceed has an intimacy and immediacy that deepen with each listen.” For Jon’s Fly Around Fest set, he’ll be joined by longtime collaborators Nick Arrivo (bass) and Jamie Linder (pedal steel).

Universal Light is a flow, a chant, an ongoing search. It is Mike Gangloff (Pelt, ) on 4- and 9-string fiddles, Jesse Sheppard (, The Heavy Lidders) on 12-string guitar, and Kaily Schenker (, Meridiane) on cello, harmonium and sometimes, singing. The trio’s music unfurled on an instantly sold-out 2024 album self-released by the band, then re-issued this year by VHF Records, and it expands farther at every live outing — dancing, floating, weeping and laughing, reaching for the heart of it all. At last year’s festival Mike and Kaily joined Elkhorn’s set and we enjoyed them so much we invited Universal Light to take the stage as their own entity this year.

Lost Province Arts is a community arts non-proft offering programming in Ceramics, Fiber Arts along with Music and Dance. LPA has taken on the role of custodians of the beautiful WPA era Lansing School campus, built in 1938 from local stone, and serving as the largest school in Lansing for years, closing in the mid 1990’s. After Hurricane Helene the community gathered at the campus for emergency relief and LPA rallied to support recovery efforts from the school.
Currently launching a large fundraising effort to restore the campus as a community arts center, Fly Around is proud to partner and support this important asset and landmark. We’re firm believers that the arts are central to a healthy culture and key to sustainable growth in our mountain town.
Aug. 1 Lost Province will host a cash bar sponsored by Brewing and , and profits from the festival benefit the building restoration at the school.

Opening the festival for us Friday evening, is Elsa Howell and Blackbird Pie. Elsa Howell is a traditional Appalachian ballad singer, old-time guitarist, and songwriter from southwest Virginia. She is a devoted student of the traditional arts, as well as a fiery creative, bringing the haunting melodies of ancient song into the present. Elsa reimagines ballads and old-time tunes to fit her powerful voice and driving string band.

More local talent at the festival, our Friday night headliners Trish Fore & The Wildcats specialize in playing hard-driving, traditional, old-time instrumental music from the Blue Ridge Mountains of southwest Virginia and northwest North Carolina. Composed of Trish Kilby Fore on clawhammer banjo; Kevin Fore on fiddle; Kyle Dean Smith on guitar; and Chris Johson on bass, these folks have their wildcat claws sharpened and ready to play at Lansing’s Fly Around Fest.
