Sunsets, stories, and a lasting legacy. 🌅✨💙

Earlier this month, our Polaris Legacy Circle and friends gathered for a beautiful annual summer party outside at the lovely home of Michael and Jami Christian. It was a wonderful afternoon spent connecting with fellow members, celebrating our community, and reflecting on our legacy circle—the guiding stars of our future. 🌠

The day was filled with deeply moving stories that reminded us all why this group is so vital. Deana shared a heartfelt story about her personal journey and why she chose to become a Polaris member, while our incoming Board Chair, Jim Carney, spoke inspiringly about the power of planned giving and how we can create a lasting legacy for the arts. We also shared a tender moment in honor of Karen Leeds, a beloved former Board Member and Polaris member we lost this past year. Finally, Jane Hardin touched our hearts with a beautiful story about her neighbor in San Diego, who gifted her and her wife a legacy gift specifically to be given to their favorite charities. 💙

This event was so special, and we were treated to a delicious spread of meats and cheeses from Greenbank Pantry & Deli alongside our very own talented hospitality manager, Suzie Browne.

Mark your calendars! Bob Merry returns to WICA on August 28 for an Unscripted Center Conversation Series event with US District Court Judge John C. Coughenour. The former chief judge of the Western District of Washington, Judge Coughenour continues to hear cases in a number of courts including Guam, while on senior status. He was appointed to the District Court bench in 1981 by President Reagan. A noted and frequent speaker about the importance of preserving an independent judiciary, Judge Coughenour will discuss the Rule of Law and why the continued independence of the judiciary is crucial to our democracy. This week we welcomed the students in our Youth Summer Conservatory to the WICA campus. It was a great start to a program that introduces participants to costume and set design, music and lighting, and the performing arts. In partnership with the Whidbey Institute, this yearly summer camp is a beautiful reflection of arts in action. This adventure camp will culminate in three outdoor performances of A Wrinkle in Time, August 28-30 on the Storyhouse Stage of the Whidbey Institute. 🎨🐖 A look behind the scenes at a true creative sanctuary! This past Thursday, our lucky auction winners got a rare, intimate look into the lives and storied careers of one of the Northwest's most iconic artistic duos: sculptor Georgia Ge**er and her husband, musician Randy Hudson. Guests toured their beautiful studio and home, taking in Georgia's delightful rose and vegetable gardens. They listened to beautiful stories about how Georgia and Randy first met, their deep-rooted commitment to our island community, and how they found this magical property. A major highlight was a special preview of Georgia’s monumental 2027 Seattle public art commission—huge, breathtaking salmon sculptures bound for a downtown high-rise! 🐟✨ (If you’ve ever loved the famous "Rachael the Pig" at Pike Place Market, seeing these new giants up close was a dream come true!) The evening was made perfect with heavy hors d'oeuvres and amazing custom pizzas made by Steven and Michelle Barbour, courtesy of the talented Candice May McLain at . Thank you to Georgia and Randy for opening their home, to Nancy and Brad Thompson, and to the WICA team for making it all happen. Most of all, a huge thank you to the generous auction winners who stepped up to support local arts at WICA! 🥂🍷

Unscripted: Bobbe Bridge & Mary Yu

WICA is thrilled to host an Unscripted conversation with retired Washington State Supreme Court Justices Bobbe Bridge and Mary Yu, moderated by Public Policy and Criminal Justice analyst Janice O'Mahony. These distinguished speakers will explore liberty, justice, and the courts in today's world. Ranging from personal topics and background to current issues within our justice system, Janice will shine the light on decades of perspective of these two pioneers. Justices Bridge and Yu have been tireless, fearless, and undaunted from the work as female trailblazers in Washington State. This is a rare opportunity to be in the room with these powerhouse voices. Topics discussed may include: Should there be term limits to the Supreme Court? and what do you see as the upside or downside of expanding the number of Justices? The People's Hospital: The History of Medical Care on Whidbey Island is an evening of storytelling, film, and community dialogue that explores how a rural island built and sustained its own healthcare system through resilience, ingenuity, and collective effort. At the heart of the program is a documentary film by Samuel Wolfe, capturing firsthand accounts from key figures who shaped the island's medical landscape. Through personal stories and historical reflection, the film reveals how Whidbey Island residents met the challenge of providing care in relative isolation, often when outside support was limited or unavailable. Followed by an open forum inviting audience members to engage directly with panelists from the video and WhidbeyHealth's current leadership. Tickets available at wicaonline.org.
