This morning I conducted an upclose, anthropological study of one of nature's most peculiar creatures, the musician. They welcomed me into their natural environment; a wild place where the musician may be free and true. This morning, they let me crash their band practice. This is part of a new series we are doing, introducing some of the people behind some of the music. Today, we introduce The Lost Springs Band.
Band practice has a very specific sound. It's dissonant notes from several, different instruments tuning simultaneously. It's the low, grumble of a bass amp purring like a muscle car waiting to drag race while human voices make some serious sounds between mostly non serious ones and lots of laughter. I hear this sound emanating from their practice room as Tim's wife, Karyn leads me inside.
I catch them between songs and they greet me warmly, by which I mean to say that the energy is as enveloping as a post pandemic hug from a long lost friend. Some things can't be faked. There is a commraderie between this band that is joyfully authentic. I like them immediately.
I walk past a sign that reads "Tim's World Famous Guitar Lounge" towards a stool in the corner and they go immediately into a song I've never heard, called "Wrong Five O'clock."
Tim Ervin is playing guitar on this track as well as lead vocals. He's the only remaining member of The Lost Springs Band's original assemblage from 1989. Three decades of rock and roll later and The Lost Springs Band is in it's 12th or 13th iteration. Today's Lost Springs Band features Tim on guitar, bass and vocals. Kevin Tippetts on guitar, bass and vocals. Larry Bauman on keys. Scott Gantenbein on drums and vocals and Marnie Fusco on lead vocals.
They sound tight. They are obviously well practiced and best of all I can sense how much fun they are having playing which makes it that much more fun to listen to.
They go right into a unique version of "My Little Runaway" which really shows off Marnie's voice. Larry tickles the keys in all the right spots on this song and Tim plays a sweet lead guitar.
There is short banter break after this and someone cracks a joke that I don't catch. "Give em the dollar!" I hear. Apparently they have a tradition of a wandering dollar at band practice going to whoever delivers a hilarious zinger. These are the kinds of rituals that truly define us.
They then play "Amie" by pure Prarie league with Scott on lead vocals before Tim and Kevin switch spots on bass and guitar so Kevin can take lead on "Just what I needed" by The Cars. They play "Big Yellow Taxi" before I have to say goodbye, once again highlighting Marnie's vocals.
The Lost Springs Band is HIGH ENERGY!
Switching between vocals gives a nice texture to that energy. They play pure rock and roll which is sustained by the passion that they each individually have for music.
We chatted pleasantly for a few after I said I needed to go when Larry grew serious for a moment.
"I consider it a real privilege," he said, "to be able to play with these guys." He told me that he joined the band some five years ago and that it had been a while since he'd played before that. The emotion was clear to me. There is no relationship quite like that of band mate. It's a connection forged with a group by a passion that simply cannot be realized alone.
The musician, on it's own will rarely survive in the wild. If however he or she is able to find a pack then the pack may collectively triumph over whatever the wilderness may hide. This is what I witnessed today and I consider it a real privilege to have been allowed to exist with The Lost Springs Band in their space. Like their page to stay updated about when you can catch their next show or to book them for your next party.

Candice is always confident when she gets ready to perform, or maybe hungry is a more apt description. Her husband, Brady is hungry too but perhaps a little nervous as well.
The room is abuzz with the cacophony of gathered people as Candice and Brady plug in and get ready. Plates clatter, lips murmur and pint glasses chime. This moment always feels like a song itself to me; watching with anticipation as performers prepare to command the attention of a space with their own vibrations.
I have been privileged to witness Candice in this moment several times and to see her progress as an artist. Brady too, who took some convincing at first to join her on stage. Last night, after open mic, I sat down with them to get just a little bit of their story. This is part of a new series we are doing, introducing some of the people behind some of the music.
Candice has been playing guitar since she was 15. She's self taught via tablature and chordbook. Mostly she's been performing at open mics and with her worship team at church but this February she got the opportunity to perform at Bar 10 as part of their Galentine's Day event which featured local, female musicians. That opportunity seems to have really sparked her passion to perform and her energy is infectious. Candice is bold when she plays; enthusiastic... she takes risks.
Coincidentally, this is how she met Brady.
"How about them Avs?" She asked him, in their psychology class at Casper College some 18 years ago.
She noticed him, she tells me and described in language that this writer won't quote except to say that she found him to be the object of her desire and was willing to take a risk to meet him. He was wearing a Colorado Avalanche hat and this line was her brilliant ruse to break the ice.
Of course no ruse was needed, but someone had to be willing to take the first risk. They were married 2 years later and it was about this time that Brady started pleading with Candice to teach him how to play guitar. She declined, believing that she didn't possess the skills to teach anyone how to play and so Brady took a risk, bought a bass guitar and taught himself how to play it. Now, almost 16 years into their marriage and they are taking risks together, on stage finding rhythm and harmony.
This is, to me, is the most beautiful thing. Music for these two is a way to strengthen their marriage while also exploring the depths of their individuality. I can feel this chemistry when they play together and it leaves my heart a touch lighter for the listening. As summer nears, Candice is searching for more opportunities to book gigs and play out. Her husband is going in for shoulder surgery as I write this and may have to take a few months off from playing. I spoke to them last night about trying to book the two of them for a show and Brady was eager to play despite his recovery. Like I said, these two are hungry. Where there is music, there is a way and where these two are playing, you'll be hungry too.
