Candice is always confident when she gets ready to perform, or maybe hungry is a more apt description. Her husband, Brady is hungry too but perhaps a little nervous as well.
The room is abuzz with the cacophony of gathered people as Candice and Brady plug in and get ready. Plates clatter, lips murmur and pint glasses chime. This moment always feels like a song itself to me; watching with anticipation as performers prepare to command the attention of a space with their own vibrations.
I have been privileged to witness Candice in this moment several times and to see her progress as an artist. Brady too, who took some convincing at first to join her on stage. Last night, after open mic, I sat down with them to get just a little bit of their story. This is part of a new series we are doing, introducing some of the people behind some of the music.
Candice has been playing guitar since she was 15. She's self taught via tablature and chordbook. Mostly she's been performing at open mics and with her worship team at church but this February she got the opportunity to perform at Bar 10 as part of their Galentine's Day event which featured local, female musicians. That opportunity seems to have really sparked her passion to perform and her energy is infectious. Candice is bold when she plays; enthusiastic... she takes risks.
Coincidentally, this is how she met Brady.
"How about them Avs?" She asked him, in their psychology class at Casper College some 18 years ago.
She noticed him, she tells me and described in language that this writer won't quote except to say that she found him to be the object of her desire and was willing to take a risk to meet him. He was wearing a Colorado Avalanche hat and this line was her brilliant ruse to break the ice.
Of course no ruse was needed, but someone had to be willing to take the first risk. They were married 2 years later and it was about this time that Brady started pleading with Candice to teach him how to play guitar. She declined, believing that she didn't possess the skills to teach anyone how to play and so Brady took a risk, bought a bass guitar and taught himself how to play it. Now, almost 16 years into their marriage and they are taking risks together, on stage finding rhythm and harmony.
This is, to me, is the most beautiful thing. Music for these two is a way to strengthen their marriage while also exploring the depths of their individuality. I can feel this chemistry when they play together and it leaves my heart a touch lighter for the listening. As summer nears, Candice is searching for more opportunities to book gigs and play out. Her husband is going in for shoulder surgery as I write this and may have to take a few months off from playing. I spoke to them last night about trying to book the two of them for a show and Brady was eager to play despite his recovery. Like I said, these two are hungry. Where there is music, there is a way and where these two are playing, you'll be hungry too.
