On February 28th, 2014, Speak to My Soul: A Montage of Voices debuted at a PWI, Shippensburg University, with a cast of over 25 Black students voicing stories of the Black experience using spoken word, song and dance. The show invites the audience to an “open mic where the stories come to life” and they are taken on a spoken word and musical journey through montages of moments and movements in Black history.
Inspired by Ntozake Shange’s coined “Choreopoem,” Evita Colon ( ) wrote, directed and produced this show in multiple cities selling out theatres with an authentic experience that pushed the limitations of how Black stories were told in theatre and how the audience can interact with it.
On this show alone, she has worked with over 100 artists and including adding additional writers and songwriters to the show to evolve the messaging. Many artists have performed for the first time on Speak to My Soul stages.
The production set the tone for the company providing foundational pillars to empower, educate and elevate as Speak to My Soul evolved into a talent agency, production company and cultural strategy firm.
Speak to My Soul has since transformed the landscape of poetry and Black art in Lancaster, PA and beyond with productions, content and events that pushed barriers before Black art was fully welcomed and embraced.
