Just a few weeks remain to see this year's Community Art Exhibition at the Demuth Museum of Art on Lime! Visit us by September 6 to view works by 135 local artists and vote for your favorite in the People's Choice Award, to be announced after the end of the show!

On view in our special 250 on King exhibition, the "William Pitt, Earl of Chatham" tavern sign, painted by Lancaster artist Jacob Eichholtz, dates back to the early 1800s.

Built between 1750-60, the Demuth Museum of Art on King is part of the largest block of buildings from that era still standing in Lancaster City. The building's first resident was John Messencope, Sr., a blacksmith and tavernkeeper who was the first operator of the William Pitt, Earl of Chatham tavern. In 1808, the tavern was operated by Henry Deffinbaugh, who commissioned this sign by Eichholtz.

The tavern was purchased by Jacob Demuth in the late 1830s to expand the family residence for his 20 children, and the property stayed in the Demuth family until the death of Augusta Demuth, Charles Demuth's mother, in 1943.

Our Kids Summer Sketchbook Club is in its final weeks! This week, try designing your own dream treehouse! What kind of tree would you build it in? Would you build slides and swings, or other fun additions? 🌳🪜

Charles Demuth painted all different types of trees during his travels and at home in Lancaster. Some examples of trees included in the Demuth Museum of Art collection include Tree Forms (1916) and Landscape with Windmill #1 (1896), one of Demuth's earliest paintings - he painted this landscape when he was 13 years old!

Our Museum Movie Night is coming up this month! 🎬 Join us at the Demuth Museum of Art on Lime on Saturday, August 29 for a family movie night in Musser Park! Stop by at 6 pm to enjoy a craft and listen to music by the Musser Park Civic Association’s presentation of the Nielsen Family Band. At 8 pm, take a seat in Musser Park to enjoy a screening of National Treasure (2004)!

Bring your own blankets and chairs. Food will be available for purchase from Greco’s Ice Cream, Good Eats Food Truck, & Local Sips from 6:30 - 9:30 pm.

If you participated in our Kids Summer Sketchbook Club, make sure to bring your completed sketchbook to claim your prize bag!

Museum Movie Night is free for all to attend thanks to the support of Art Bridges and the High Foundation.

As we enter the last few weeks of Kids Summer Sketchbook club, here is a new prompt - try creating a scene full of underwater life! Think of things you might see under the water in the ocean or a lake - fish, seaweed, turtles, an octopus...what other sea creatures can you think of? 🐙🐠🌊

Charles Demuth created a Fish Series of watercolor paintings around 1917 that capture some of the tropical fish that he saw during his trip to Bermuda. Five of these fish paintings are now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Some other Bermuda-inspired artwork that Demuth created is in the Demuth Museum of Art collection, including Three-Masted Schooner, currently on view at our King Street location.

The Open Studio of our 2026 Artist-in-Residence, Abigail Dudley, begins today! Stop by Thursday from 10 - 4, Friday from 10 - 8, or Saturday from 10 - 4 to view the works completed during her 6-week stay in Lancaster! The open studio is at our Program Center (116 East King Street), right next door to Demuth on King. Special extra hours are included during our Gin Garden on First Friday from 6 - 8 pm!

As we enter a new month, here is another prompt for our Kids Summer Sketchbook Club members - take inspiration from summer cookouts and try drawing a table filled with your dream summer dinner! 🌭🌽🍑 What are your favorite summertime foods?

Charles Demuth often painted fruits and vegetables that his mother, Augusta Demuth, purchased at Central Market. A piece in the Demuth Museum of Art collection, Peaches & Plums, shows an in-process watercolor painting of summertime fruits!

As you work on filling up your sketchbook, don't forget to mark your calendars for our Museum Movie Night coming up later this month on August 29, 6 - 10 pm at the Demuth Museum of Art on Lime (135 North Lime Street)!

The 2026 Demuth Artist-in-Residence, Abigail Dudley, is opening her studio to the public in one week! Join us August 6 - 8 at the Demuth Program Center (116 East King Street) to view works created by Abigail during her residency this summer. The Open Studio will also have special extended hours during our Gin Garden on August 7 from 6 - 8 pm! We hope you'll join us!

We're halfway through our Kids Sketchbook Club Summer! This week, try drawing a summer still life! 🪴

Still life is a style of art that features objects, such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, baskets, and many more items. Gather 3 - 5 summery items, arrange them on a table or a flat surface, and draw your observations!

An example of a still life by Charles Demuth is Still Life for Fire Screen. This painting shows his observations of 3 potted plants and a pair of butterflies. This artwork is on view in the Legacy Gallery at the Demuth Museum of Art on King!
