and I decided to make the center pieces for our wedding in December. Here is a look at our first batch of pieces from a recent salt firing. I am really happy with the results and am looking forward to seeing how will arrange our vessels for our special day!

I was working with some new clay this week and unfortunately it was a little too wet and didn’t have much body. I pushed this bowl too far and it eventually collapsed on me, oh well.

Started working on a pitcher/basin set for tonight. I stopped the video because I thought I was done, but decided to go back and add the double rim. I’m really pleased with it, but I know the handle will be the real test.

I was watching YouTube a couple months back and came across a demo by Shozo Michikawa at Leksands folkhögskole. His mastery of texture and form were on full display as he demonstrated different techniques to transform your pot. I attempted to recreate two of them and have had varying degrees of success. I am really proud of both of these pieces, but I confess to having a favorite and it’s the plate. I got it back this Monday from a wood firing where it was placed in the salt chamber.

To create this form I threw a disc on the wheel and then used a textured metal rib to add concentric circles of varying widths from the center. I then undercut the disc, threw the clay on the table to stretch it out, placed it back on the wheel, cut out a plate sized circle with a needle tool, coiled the excess, added the coil to the rim and then threw the rim.

I loved how organic the form was, but didn’t know how I was going to glaze fire the plate to accentuate the movement. I’m glad I held out for this firing and made it into the salt chamber because this firing really highlights the plate in my opinion.

I think the texture looks better on this Dark Star small batch clay than it does on the Phoenix stoneware. Time will tell if it looks better after being glaze fired as well!

Testing out some new texture techniques and I’m excited to see how they turn out after glaze firing.

I’ve been using a metal rib that has different sized facets and is curved like a boomerang to add my texture. On the vase I threw a cylinder and then ran texture up the sides before forming the vase from the inside out.

For the plate I threw a thick plate. Added rings with the rib before removing the plate from the bat with my hands. Then I threw the plate onto our wedging table, which stretched it out and then transported it back to the bat. I then used a needle tool to create my circle for the plate. Wedged and coiled the discarded clay. Pinched the coil onto the edge of the plate and then created the rim out of the coil. I really like the movement of the plate and I hope the shino I glazed with allows the texture to shine through!

Here are some other pieces from the gas firing. We’ll hopefully be firing again soon, so I can see how my porcelain pieces turn out. I’m going to use the same glaze I used on the lamps, but the lamps were brown clay so there should be some variation in color.
