Mussorgsky: Pictures at an Exhibition, arr. Julian Yu
Inspired by a memorial exhibition of works by his friend, the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, Mussorgsky’s 1874 piano suite takes the listener on a musical walk through a gallery. The recurring Promenade suggests the visitor moving from one artwork to the next, while each “picture” is transformed into a distinctive musical scene.

This performance features Australian-Chinese composer Julian Yu’s 2001 chamber arrangement for 16 players. Rather than simply enlarging Mussorgsky’s piano writing, Yu uses the intimate forces of a chamber ensemble to create an extraordinary variety of instrumental colors and textures. The viola serves as the musical representation of Mussorgsky himself, while echo effects, percussion, unusual instrumental combinations, and subtle influences of Chinese musical traditions bring a fresh perspective to this famous musical exhibition.

Jeffrey Campbell Binner: Harvest of Lancaster County
Growing up in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, composer Jeffrey Campbell Binner was fascinated by the region’s agricultural traditions and, in particular, the rhythms of the Amish harvest season. He drew on the enduring cycle of Lancaster County farm life—plowing and planting, the growing season, and the culmination of the harvest—to create this musical portrait of the landscape he knew as a child. The work was composed while Binner was a student at Gettysburg College and premiered by the Allegro Chamber Orchestra in 2018.

From Lancaster’s fields to the gallery walls, Fresco Firelight explores the ways music can capture a sense of place, season, and visual imagination. Jeffrey Campbell Binner’s Harvest of Lancaster County and Vivaldi’s Autumn evoke the sights and sounds of harvest, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition transforms visual art into music in Julian Yu’s richly colored chamber arrangement.

After a summer of rehearsal, the Allegro Chamber Singers are ready to bring you “America 250: A Mosaic”

Heard here is another selection from Shawn Kirchner’s Three American Songs, “Hallelujah.” This song cycle has been particularly fun to learn, with Kirchner’s beautiful, lively arrangements bringing a warm glow to three already lovely songs.
