What if you could walk the same streets where the people who shaped a young America once walked?

Delegates. Colonial leaders. Revolutionaries. Lancaster wasn’t just watching history unfold in 1777 for a remarkable moment, history was happening right here.

And during the Lancaster Capital Day festival, you can still walk those streets and relive the history.

When you’re done following the footsteps of the past, you can walk right next door to Proof, one of Christine Halliday✨ Travel & Lifestyle of Wonder ‘s favorite spots for a lobster roll and a great drink after the festival. 🦞🍸

Why should we care about what happened here nearly 250 years ago?

Because history isn’t just about what happened then. It’s about understanding who we are now.

In 1777, when the young nation was in crisis, Lancaster opened its doors. Congress came here. Leaders gathered here. Ordinary Lancastrians became part of an extraordinary moment in the story of America.

And that spirit of welcome, resilience, and community is still part of Lancaster today.

So this September, we’re not just remembering that one remarkable day, we’re celebrating it together.

Wait… Lancaster was the Capital of the United States? 🇺🇸

Believe it or not, it’s true.

On September 27, 1777, Lancaster became the nation’s capital for exactly one day. It may have been brief, but it’s a story worth remembering… and celebrating.

This September, we’re bringing that story back to life with Capital Day, a community celebration filled with historic experiences, local vendors, delicious food, family activities, live entertainment, and plenty of Lancaster pride.

We are pairing up with locals who love Lancaster (like Christine Halliday✨ Travel & Lifestyle of Wonder ) to get the word out and bring us all together to celebrate! 🎉
Whether you’re a lifelong local or discovering Lancaster for the first time, we’d love for you to be part of it.

Follow as we reveal special experiences, behind-the-scenes access, vendors, performers, and everything you need to plan your day.

A huge thank you to Adam Zurn Uncharted Lancaster for helping us tell this incredible story. If you enjoyed this history lesson, be sure to check out Adam’s page and his book for even more fascinating stories about Lancaster’s past.
