Movies With Heroes has decided to use this opportunity to release our first new single since we released Bring on the Night. It is in fact a love song, but not in the traditional sense. Right now, in this country there is tidal wave, an outpouring, a volcanic spewing of mean-spiritedness and vengeful deluge of official and unofficial behavior. Open displays of hate and rejection are in vogue again. There is little we can do as individuals to stop it in its tracks. But we can make music, and that’s what we will continue to do. This song is deeply personal for me. Too personal in fact to attempt make a detailed explanation, but I want to say a word or two about it.
Trite or harmlessly shallow expressions of romantic love abound on February 14th. And that’s fine. But love is a deeply powerful and transformative spiritual principle, a mystery even. Some of us believe there are divine and cosmic implications wrapped up in this concept. I happen to believe the human project is learning how to love while we are here. It is hard, messy work and hurts a lot.
This song is in part about my love for my youngest child. A new kind of love I have been challenged to step into in recent years, even as a storm of distrust and ugly exclusion is spinning and finding new ways to divide and diminish our ability to love without narrowly defined and even policed parameters. This song is for them and about them. Radical love is a choice, an action, a behavior, a disposition, and it is work. This song is about choosing this Love and this work. It is about trusting it and following it wherever it leads in this realm and the other unknown realms that interact with our reality.
PS: I recommend listening to this one with headphones.
Thanks for listening. Stay tuned for music in the coming months.
Little Fire
You could barely swim, you’d just learned to walk
You stood there on the sand, chewed your lip and took stock
Watched the waves crash and come find your toes
I saw your fearless, god-shaped kind of soul
I called you Little Fire, burned you right on my heart.
I thought there was nothing that could dim that spark
But middle school’s a cauldron full of kids
Where insecurities press knives to ribs
You flame on, Little Fire. Go on, can’t you see? It’s love in all directions.
You flame on, Little Fire. It’s true, can’t you see? It’s love in four dimensions
Something didn’t fit, like it clouded your light
It stole your breath and gripped your sweet spirit tight
Some kind of fear locked you up in your bones
A butterfly out searching for a home
You are a diamond, the gate of heaven
Further up and in there is mansion seven
Theresa’s castle with a spiral stair
We’re home inside with God, no labels there
Butterflies going from flower to flower
We will rest when we find what’s only ours
Each time we land we know this can’t be it
Someone whispers it’s not the beloved
Your arms open wide. Oh God is this real? Is it love in all directions?
Yes, we’re like butterflies. We have tattered wings. But it’s love in four dimensions.
Float up to the stars. Or down into the sea. Just love in all directions.
Flame on, Little Fire. Thank you. You taught me, That it’s love in all directions.
