Tomorrow’s Oscar Sunday! Did you know Anna Magnani was the first Italian actress to win an Oscar?

Anna Magnani (1908-1973) was an Italian film and stage actress, best known for her role in “The Rose Tattoo.” Born in Rome, Magnani was initially educated in a French convent school, where she learned French, the piano, and developed a love of acting from watching the nuns at her school stage their Christmas plays. At 17, Magnani paid her way through Rome’s Royal Academy of Dramatic Art by singing in nightclubs and cabarets. While acting in local theaters in Rome, she was discovered by Italian filmmaker Goffredo Alessandrini and performed in her first major film role in 1934.

Magnani achieved international fame through Roberto Rossellini’s iconic neorealist film, “Roma, Città Aperta” (Rome, Open City) in 1945. The film, which focused on the final days of German occupation in Italy during WWII, solidified Magnani as a star. She was noted not for conventional beauty, but for her raw and fiery performances that earned her nicknames such as “La Lupa,” and “Rome’s she-wolf.” Magnani would go on to work with a number of other prominent directors and screenwriters such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Fellini, Jean Renoir, and Tennessee Williams, among others. She was nominated for and won a number of awards, including an Academy Award for Best Actress, which she won for her role in “The Rose Tattoo” in 1955—the first Italian actress in history to win an Oscar.

Magnani passed away in 1973 at the age of 65 of pancreatic cancer, but remains an iconic actress in the history of Italian film.
