Want to play faster? Practice slower! If you can’t play it cleanly when it’s slow, then you will never be able to play it cleanly (or on time) at a challenging tempo. The connections your brain and body need to make to play faster are much better developed and baked in when we practice slowly.
But then…
Practice Faster! You need to push yourself past your physical breaking point and see where your technique breaks down, and during which parts. It’ll sound messy, but practicing at extreme tempos is key to developing faster playing. Try to dedicate about 10% of your practice sessions to playing at uncomfortably fast tempos.
