Sharing Geometrics # 11, 12 x 12. I aimed for a quiet balance between the straight horizontal bands and a single round form. A pale yellow disc sits just above center on a ribbed, dusk-toned field of blacks, blues, greens and teals. Wavy reeded glass and subtle metallic touches in white, gold, copper, silver and chartise catch the light and create small moments of contrast. I pulled together old finish samples and stencils from projects I’ve worked on over the last ten years to create this piece. Strips of different widths form a tidy, layered grid where coral shapes, seahorses, and schools of fish move through bands of blue. A light spray of blue and a clear coating give it a watery sheen, while the reclaimed materials point to how our built world can press into reef habitats. Stopped at a forest preserve along the Des Plaines River between appointments and found this quiet late-summer scene. Trees, stressed by drought, were just starting to turn yellow gold, and one limb reached out across the water as if trying to touch the sun. Light broke the river into bands of blue, warm brown, and soft green while low grasses and small yellow blooms edged the bank. On a quick break between appointments I noticed the first spots of fall color in a stand of trees. The canopy still held most leaves, letting beams of light fall in soft bands and lighting small patches of the ground. I wanted those shifting highlights to carry through, so the piece responds to how the light hits it and the view changes a bit as you move, catching little sparkles in the dappled light.
