Most of us feel that romantic love is a natural state. However, did you know that “romantic” or “courtly love” didn’t make its appearance until about the 14th century -- only 700 years ago or so. Before that time, people got together because we knew that for our species to survive, we must reproduce… and so we did.
The concept of romantic love is rooted in - egocentricity. That is, we want to love just as much as we want to be loved. We naturally seek love out in other people, places, and things. We believe that love can be the most amazing thing that we experience in our lifetimes, and I have to say, this idea is probably right.
So, we love because we want to love. We want to be loved, and as much as we need to be touched. We feel amazing when we find ourselves in love and especially when we are with the right person. There is nothing like it or ever will be. The reason so many of us fail when it comes to love is that we have a misunderstood an unwise idea of what love is and what love is for. Just like everything else in life, love is meant to benefit you first and foremost followed by hopefully the experience of witnessing how love empowers another – the person you love.
