I am extremely grateful to Gallery46 in Lake Placid (Gallery 46) for selling these five of my framed photographs in July, to a variety of purchasers. They include in-camera multiple exposure and single image digital abstract photographs, a panoramic winter landscapes, and landscape images made on black and white film with vintage cameras, framed from 38” x 28” to 10” x 20”.

I love this meet the artist concept. I hope I can make it to the opening. I think this is a wonderful thing for the Art Center to do.  To me the best part of an art opening is the opportunity to speak to the artist or artists about what’s behind the work they make, the process, why they created what they did, and whatever else comes up.

Thank you for your recent sale of this photograph.

“Adirondack Loj Road In Winter” is one of my most popular photographs. And one of my many mine now for sale at Gallery 46 in Lake Placid, NY.

It was made on the Adirondack Loj Road in Lake Placid in midwinter. To create it I had to climb up a 4’ snowbank. The image is of a line of trees at the end of a snow covered farm field, on a highly overcast day.

It is one of the photographs in my “Film - Landscape” body of work, made on black and white film using vintage medium format and 35mm film cameras. This was made with a Hasselblad 500C medium format camera, which makes “square” negatives.

When shooting film with these cameras, exposure is determined using an “old fashioned” spot meter. By specifically metering the light falling on the trees and setting the camera exposure controls to allow for detail in that dark area, the surrounding snow/overcast sky are “whited out”, giving this “minimalist” composition, which is what I intended for the final image. I work this way, with intention, pre-visualization and result-based exposure calculations, a lot. It’s the way people like Ansel Adams made photographs in the “olden days”.

Gallery 46 has color photography from my Abstract Multiplicity series and Painted By The Elements series of abstract photography, black and white photographs (mostly landscape) taken with vintage 35mm and medium format cameras, and a few of my very popular digital landscape photographs. All are framed and range in size from 12”x12” to 38”x28” and in price from $95 to $865.

An invitational group show recently opened in Saranac Lake, at Coldwell, Banker, Whitbeck. These three photographs are mine that are included, along with a few works from each of a dozen or so photographers, painters, collage artists, sculptors and textile artists.

“A Shared Wall with a New View: Celebrating Community Art in our New Home”, simultaneously celebrates CBW's move to its new location and its long-standing support of the artist community. CBW has essentially presented their real estate office as an art gallery, with exhibits regularly presented, all while serving the real estate brokerage needs of the community. And they do not take any commission on art sales.

This exhibit presents works by artists who have exhibited in the CBW “gallery” since day, each exhibiting a few pieces. The exhibit runs until July 12, with a Grand Reopening and “meet the artists” event on June 18 as part of Third Thursday Art Walk in Saranac Lake. I’ll post more on that later, but there will be food, “things to drink”, live music ART and its creators, as well as CBW folks on hand to get to know, and to thank for presenting this work for the Saranac Lake community…

I’ll be there to meet you and, if you like, discuss my work with you. Here’s a little bit about my photographs in this show to spark your interest.

The first, “With A Little Help From My Friends” (framed, 18”x24”), is a photograph of reflections of trees on the surface of an Adirondack pond “rippled” by the wake of a beaver swimming “off camera”. A planned shot, not a lucky accident.

The middle photograph ,“Holding On”, is a photograph (framed, 24”x18”) taken on film with a vintage medium format camera of a 10’ tall boulder in the Adirondacks, “held” by the roots of a tree that has been growing over it for decades.

The last one, “Painted By The Elements #501”(framed at 16”x20”), is from a large number abstract photographs of weathered/deterioratedpaint on hulls of sailboats left uncovered in outdoor winter storage. Image are composed "in the camera" as I walk among the hulls looking closely at texture, color, detail, etc

State Of The Union

This photograph, which I took years ago of a deteriorating barn at the bottom of Spruce Hill between Keene and Keene Valley in the Adirondacks, near where I live, is to me a depiction of the current state of affairs in America.

The door has been closed on a deteriorating foundation and nothing is being done to save the structure....The title… "They Closed The Door On An Old Friend"...Kinda what it feels like to me right now in America

“Early Fall On Wells Hill” - Just sold by Gallery46 in Lake PlacId, NY and on the way to its new home. Thanks foe the sale

I created this photograph of trees in the fall at the top of Wells Hill, a small mountain in the Adirondacks between Lewis and Upper Jay, by quickly moving the camera vertically as I took the image. That’s what created the look of it being painted with soft brushes in muted tones. And I printed it on watercolor paper, to enhance that look even further.

Framed at 8”x20”.

Come see what a host of very talented artists have created with the theme of self portrait. It’s not just a bunch of selfies. I’m excited to have some of my work included in the show with these talented artists.

When I got an email inviting me to submit for a Juried Self-Portrait exhibit, I thought. “I don’t do self-portraits.” I do abstract, conceptual, black and white landscape on film, but not self-portraits…But then I thought, actually, I’m the subject in some weird stuff I’ve done in reflections, multiple exposures, etc. triggering the shot with a timer. Those are “self-portraits”. I submitted these three. All were accepted.

The first, “What Comes Next?”, is my interpretation of what goes through our mind/spirit in the moments immediately following death when we are wondering, or discovering, what comes next, if anything, or contemplating the possible reality that there is nothing at all that comes “next” - and there is no “next”, there is only “now” or nothing. It is made using in-camera multiple exposure, where two or more photographs in succession, blend into a single image within the camera when taken and NOT in Photoshop..Takes much planning/pre-visualization when oing it with a specific statement/message/result in mind.

The next, “I Think I’m In Here Somewhere”, is a photograph I made of myself in front of a reflective surface, experimenting to see if I could find a way to use it in a conceptual series.. It was not intended as an actual photograph for exhibition.

“Self Reflection” is just that. Some time ago Eleanor Sweeney, a highly talented photographer-artist who recently passed away gave me a sheet of mylar (reflective piece paper that reflects distorted images) and said “See if you can do anything with this”….It became the basis of a body of work exploring our inner psyche/dream states/weirdness… This is one of the first photographs I made using what Eleanor gave me. It’s another “selfie”.

Each of these photographs are framed at 20x16 and available for purchase at the exhibit.
