Joyce Ann Knight Moretz
Visitation at 4:00 p.m., memorial service at 4:30 p.m., Thursday, October 15th, 2026, in the sanctuary at First Presbyterian Church, Lake Placid.

Joyce, 85, went peacefully to be with her Lord on Friday, October 9, 2026, at her home in Lake Placid with her beloved children, Amy and David, at her side. She was born August 15, 1941, in Simpsonville, South Carolina. Joyce met the love of her life, Alfred, at their mutual place of employment; they were married September 17, 1961, and began raising their family in Charlotte, North Carolina. Joyce attended Kings College, receiving a two-year degree in administration. She was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church and taught pre-school there. The family moved to Lake Placid in 1983 where she became a member of First Presbyterian Church Lake Placid and served as a youth leader alongside Al. She was employed as the administrative secretary at Lake Placid High School for 24 years. Also known as "Ms. Joyce," she was the heart and soul of Amy's School of Dance where she was the bookkeeper, helped parents, and loved the dancers, along with their families, for 29 years. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred; daughter, Angie; in-laws, Alfred Sr. and Carrie; uncle/aunt, John and Mabel Pope; sister, Elaine; and brother, Doug. Joyce loved her Lord, her husband, her children, her brothers and sisters, her niece and nephews, and her friends. She had a special way of loving others and pointing them to the Lord by humble example. She loved spending time with her family, working in the yard, baking, cooking, and helping others. She was a loved lady. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Alfred C. Moretz Sr. Memorial Scholarship at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid. Family will receive friends at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026, at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Placid with a memorial service to follow at 4:30 p.m.

A recording of our traditional worship service on Sunday, October 4th, is now available on YouTube! The recording contains a sermon from Pastor Reid Thayer entitled "Held Fast in the Storm," Jean-Joseph Mouret's famous "Rondeau" as a prelude from our Praise Ringers handbell choir, and a beloved setting of Psalm 46 "God Is Our Refuge and Strength" from our historic ARP collection "Harp of David" as our choir anthem. Our Praise ringers also accompanied the first two congregational songs, hymn #68 "We Praise Thee, O God" and Psalter #191 "I Love the Lord," and we had a member of our youth participate in playing "'Twas on the That Night" and "Through the Love of God Our Savior" as a piano-organ duet during communion. We hope that all of this music and all of our worship together will be a blessing and encouragement to you this week!

These are the hymns for this Sunday as we look forward to a sermon from Pastor Reid Thayer entitled "Held Fast in the Storm" and the celebration of the Lord's Supper. Our Praise Ringers handbell choir will be playing Jean-Joseph Mouret's "Rondeau" as the prelude and accompanying our first two congregational songs, our choir anthem will be a setting of Psalm 46 "God Is Our Refuge and Strength" from our beloved ARP anthem book "Harp of David," originally published in 1901, and our concluding postlude will be the "Festal March" from Handel's "Rinaldo." We hope that all of this music and all of our worship together will be a blessing and encouragement to you this week!

A recording of our traditional worship service on Sunday, September 27th, is now available on YouTube! The recording contains a sermon from Pastor Reid Thayer entitled "A Testimony of Grace” from Acts 26:1-32, Bach's "Sheep May Safely Graze" as a special opening prelude with our orchestra, and all of the congregational singing and service music from our time together. Our choir anthem was "Here I Am, Lord" as arranged by Craig Courtney with Debbie Bloemsma accompanying the choir on her flute, and our concluding postlude a festival piece on "Holy, Holy, Holy" by Texas-based composer and organist Jerry Westenkuehler (b. 1966) who led a handbell workshop at our church in the early 2000s. Our congregational songs were "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name," the Bible Songs setting of Psalm 95 to the tune for "Love Divine, All Loves Excelling," and "Once to Every Man and Nation," concluding with the fourth verse of "Just As I Am" as the benediction response. We hope that all of this music and all of our worship together will be a blessing and encouragement to you this week!

The recording contains a sermon from Associate Pastor Drew Severance entitled "Walking in Jesus' Sandals” from Acts 25:1-27, "Seek Ye First" as a special combined anthem from our children's choir and Girls' Beginning Bells, and all of the congregational singing and service music from our time together. Our choir anthem was "Be Still, My Soul" arranged by the late Hal Hopson (1933-2025) for organ and violin, and our concluding postlude the opening movement of Organ Sonata No. 3 in A by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847). Congregational songs included such favorites as "God of Grace and God of Glory," "Rise Up, O Church of God," and "Precious Lord, Take My Hand." We invite you to join us for worship this Sunday, September 20th, for worship at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. The children's choir will be singing, the girls' beginning bells will be ringing, and there's never been a better time to come to church. "Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the Rock of our salvation! Let us come into His presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to Him with songs of praise!" (Psalm 95:1-2).

The recording of our traditional worship service from Sunday, August 30th, is now available on YouTube! The recording contains a sermon from Allen Ridgdill who has been licensed to preach and is active in church planting and revitalization and all of the congregational singing and special music from the service. Our choir anthem was Joseph Martin's lovely setting of John 3:16 to using the tune "Shenandoah" and our congregational singing included such favorites as "Let All Things Now Living" and "Find Us Faithful." Our opening prelude was the famous "Largo in Eb" from "The Enigma Variations" by Edward Elgar (1857-1934), and our concluding postlude an energetic improvisation on "God of Grace and God of Glory" by Paul Manz (1919-2009).
