Persimmon spoon pre oil.

I got this beautiful bit of spalty persimmon whip in Tennessee this weekend at souther spoon gathering. What an incredible group of people, location and time we had.

On the way back from the gathering we drove the tail of the dragon 🐉 unintentionally lol. Our suv with a rooftop tent and the wet roads made it a memorable experience.

The axe, knife, hook, and spoon represent the process of making a spoon. I love the consistency and order of operations. I love how no matter what detours I take in the process I always come back to the basics. There is a lesson in there if you look closely.

“Stand by me” M.Marzano

I took this picture while eating cookout on a picnic table with my wife and step daughter. I saw the couple sitting in the Waffle House and the light on the yellow sign just seems to make it wildly obvious to me that it needed to be photographed.

I have a complicated relationship with photography because it was/is my passion in life but that passion has changed dramatically over the years. As a child it was all I could think about, as a teen it was my outlet, as an adult it kept me going and now it seems to feel flat. When passion is used as a coping mechanism is it still a passion?

I feel that the weight I put on my photography to save me from pain and sadness sort of ruined it in a way. I felt that I needed to use it to survive, to be my “thing”. Now I see it as something I used to do. I still take photos, still love it, still do it at work (a dream) but it feels flat. I don’t know if I’ll ever love it again like I did.

Im ok with it though because I have healed, persevered and am in a beautiful place that makes the struggle to get here worth it.

I didn’t lose photography, I didn’t lose myself, I gained perspective and that is life.

This slab of red oak went from wavy and moldy to flat and gorgeous. It only took about 3 hrs of hand plane work, 2 hrs or so of sanding, about 3 hrs of chisel work, 3 hrs of finishing and at least another two hours of hiding the crimes of my inexperienced self.
I’m proud to say this is the new desk for my wife’s office and she will enjoy the fruits of my labor for many years to come.

The man, the myth, the legend.

My first exposure to Roy was through my grandfather who made me watch his show as a form of punishment. If I did something stupid or was wild (adhd, dyslexia, undiagnosed…..) he would plant me in front of the tv and I’d watch the show. I hated it and then at some point I loved it. Now as an adult, I’m on a first name basis with Roy. He is truly a remarkable human, woodworker and personality.
The wheel of time sure does weave as the wheel wills!
