"Inspired by the tradition of leaving a "ghost light" on in a darkened theater, artists and communities will make or renew a pledge to stand for and protect the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone--regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

January 19th is a moment of gathering within a larger resistance to intolerance at all levels. We aim to create brave spaces that will serve as lights in the coming years. We aim to activate a network of people across the country working to support vulnerable communities.

We define "a brave space" as a space where:

It is safe to be who you are, regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability, age, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
Diverse opinions, dissent, and argument are not only tolerated, but invited.
Active listening and courageous exchange are fundamental values.
Collective action, activism, and community engagement, both within and outside the walls of the theater, are cultivated, encouraged, and supported."

This past weekend, LOHS Thespian Troupe 2898 took 43 of its members to the Michigan International Thespian Society Festival at Saginaw Valley State University. The two-day event included multiple workshop opportunities in all aspects of performance, technical theatre, college scholarship opportunities, and Individual Events (IEs) where students could perform for professional adjudicators in the hopes of qualifying for the National Festival in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Several students participated in IEs, and for the first time in the past five years, we had six students participate in the Tech Olympics.

Thanks to the support and technical direction of Drew Fry, one of our sophomores, Tyler Tyson, took 1st place overall in the Tech Olympics which included timed events in knot tying, lighting hang and focus, set change, and prop change. It's a pretty awesome achievement for a first-time competitor.

The following students also received special recognition for their performance IEs. Students who received a Superior rating have qualified for the National Thespian Festival in June.

Megan Lareau—Solo Monologue
Danni Gutelius—Solo Musical Theatre
Talia Summerville—Solo Musical Theatre
