Protein-glue tempera on unbleached cotton

830 × 1325 cm

Les Abattoirs, Musée – Frac Occitanie Toulouse, France

Created as the stage curtain for Romain Rolland’s Le 14 Juillet, this monumental work bears only a loose relationship to the drama it was commissioned to accompany. Rather than illustrating scenes from the French Revolution, Picasso transformed the commission into an autonomous mythological composition, reflecting the symbolic imagery that dominated his work during the mid-1930s.

At the center lies the lifeless body of a Minotaur clothed in the diamond-patterned costume of a harlequin, uniting two of Picasso’s most enduring recurring figures. The Minotaur and the Harlequin have long been understood by many scholars as complementary aspects of the artist’s creative identity, appearing repeatedly throughout his prints, paintings, and drawings of the decade. Their fusion here produces a singular image that is simultaneously theatrical, mythological, and deeply personal.

The surrounding figures contribute to the composition’s enigmatic character. At the right, a monumental winged figure with the head of a bird supports the Minotaur’s body with apparent ease, while to the left a translucent, bearded figure advances carrying a youthful, flower-crowned companion. Picasso deliberately avoids providing a clear narrative, allowing these hybrid forms to exist within an ambiguous symbolic space rather than illustrating a specific literary episode.

Executed in protein-glue tempera on unbleached cotton and enlarged from a smaller preparatory gouache with the assistance of the Spanish painter Luis Fernández, the curtain measures more than eight by thirteen meters. Picasso retained the work throughout the Second World War before donating it to the city of Toulouse in 1965. Owing to the fragility of its medium and immense scale, it is displayed only under carefully controlled conservation conditions.

Completed only months before Picasso began Guernica, The Remains of the Minotaur in a Harlequin Costume stands at a pivotal moment in his career. Rather than serving as conventional theatrical decoration, it transforms a public commission into a monumental meditation on mythology, performance, and the symbolic language that would culminate in some of the artist’s most significant works of the late 1930s.
