Today the country celebrates its freedom. The church asks for something harder to hold.

The Collect for the Nation prays that God would give us a zeal for justice and the strength of forbearance—that we might use our liberty in accordance with God’s will, not our own.

Justice and forbearance in the same breath. The wanting of it and the patience to wait for it.

Collect for the Nation, Book of Common Prayer

A Reflection on the July 4th, 250th Anniversary of the United States from The Rt. Rev. Paula E. Clark, XIII Bishop: 🇺🇸 “As our country marks its 250th anniversary, I want to affirm our steadfast trust in God and our commitment to "Lead With Love."

We are grateful to God for this milestone in our nation's history. Democracy began as an experiment in governance, and over 250 years has proven itself a worthy, if demanding, ideal. With hearts full of awe and commitment, we sing the national anthem, pledge allegiance to the flag, and endure long customs lines returning from abroad. We weave God into our national proclamations: "In God we trust." "One nation, under God, indivisible."

As Episcopalians, we go further…”
