Village Quilters of Lake Bluff/Lake Forest

Village Quilters of Lake Bluff/Lake Forest Village Quilters of Lake Bluff/Lake Forest is a quilting guild that meets monthly in Lake Bluff, Illinois.

Visit our web site (villagequilters.org) for up-to-date information. Village Quilters of Lake Bluff/Lake Forest draws members from northeastern Illinois. Its 130 members create and share a diverse array of quilts and wearable quilted art, host workshops, invite speakers, and participate in service projects. Membership is open to anyone who is interested in making, studying, or collecting quilts. M

onthly guild meetings include a short business meeting and show-and-tell (where guild members share their latest work) prior to the featured speaker. Village Quilters has a strong program schedule, hosting approximately eight speakers from outside the guild each year. Many of these speakers also hold day-long workshops for guild members. The cost of these workshops is subsidized by the guild. Each year members participate in a different service project, and the guild also helps to match members with smaller support groups (quilting bees). Village Quilters maintains a lending library of quilting books. Every two years, the guild holds Quilts from the Village, a show that shares their work with the public. The shows typically display approximately 250 member-made quilts and includes a silent auction, boutique items, merchant mall, and quilting demonstrations. Guild meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in Grace United Methodist Church (244 East Center Avenue), Lake Bluff, Illinois. Meetings are open to the public (visitor fees may apply).

We had a fabulous speaker tonight, Maday Delgado. She shared her passion for using reclaimed materials, or as she says, “trash” to create beautiful works of art. There are no rules in her technique and she lets the materials inspire her. She does primarily hand quilting in the sashiko style and uses colorful threads. She’s a creator and teacher and hopes to inspire others to reuse, reclaim, and create. Her work is gorgeous.

Tonight was our Guild’s annual meeting and new officers were elected. As is our tradition, the members present the outgoing President with a quilt. Blocks are made and signed by members. This is our thanks to President Sharon Pierluissi for her 2 years of outstanding leadership. Isn’t it beautiful?

Today a few members of our guild had the opportunity to do a Show and Tell for the residents at The Sheridan Green Oaks senior living facility. This group really enjoys sharing their love of quilting. It stirred memories for many and started some wonderful conversations. A couple of the residents even brought quilts of their own to show off! What a great experience.

Today we had a great workshop by one of own members, Celia Stratman. She took away the mystery of making a rope bowl, and we all left with a completed project. I have a feeling a lot of people will be receiving rope gifts in the future! It’s quite addicting, and the possibilities are endless. This was such fun!

Retreat weekend is over … just in time to watch the Bears game! So many beautiful things and beautiful people. Shout out to our new member Cecilia, who made the first quilt pictured below … her FIRST quilt! Isn’t it gorgeous?? Retreats always inspire us to try new patterns and techniques, and to buy notions we see others using! A good time was had by all.
