Meet Jennifer Huang, Guest Conductor for New Worlds — Lake County Symphony Orchestra

On September 12, the baton is in the hands of guest conductor Jennifer Huang.

Jennifer Huang is a Taiwanese-American conductor currently serving as Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of the Northwestern Medical Orchestra and Music Director of the Chicago Bar Association Symphony Orchestra. Her most recent engagements include Music Director of the Merit School of Music Chamber Orchestra and Music Director of Thompson Street Opera Co. Before locating to Chicago in 2021, Huang worked with several ensembles in the Bay Area, serving as Resident Conductor of the UC Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the Santa Rosa Symphony Aspirante Youth Orchestra, Music Director of the UCB Summer and Chamber Orchestras, and Assistant Conductor and Chorus Director of West Edge Opera.

While the majority of her work focuses on standard orchestral repertoire, Huang is also an active opera conductor and a strong advocate for new music performance, working closely with composers from around the world. An accomplished violinist, pianist, and vocalist, Huang has performed under the baton of world-class artists such as Riccardo Muti, Esa-Pekka Salonen, and Gustavo Dudamel. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California Berkeley in Molecular Cell Biology and Music, and a Master of Music in Orchestral Conducting from Northwestern Bienen School of Music.

We can't wait for you to hear what she brings to Beethoven, Farrenc, and Mendelssohn on opening night — where she'll also be the first woman to conduct this orchestra.

Four Kinds of Discovery: What You'll Hear at New Worlds

1️⃣ Mythic: Beethoven's Creatures of Prometheus — fire stolen from the gods, given to humanity.
2️⃣ Historical: Louise Farrenc's Overture No. 1 — a 19th-century composer only now getting the hearing she always deserved.
3️⃣ Geographic: Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture — born from a real sea cave he visited as a young traveler.
4️⃣ Personal: Beethoven's Symphony No. 1 — the confident, forward-looking sound of a composer discovering his own voice.

Saturday, Sept 12 at the James Lumber Center.

Every great journey starts with a single step into the unknown. This season, we take it four different ways — starting here.

NEW WORLDS | Movement I: Discovery

Saturday, September 12 • 7:30 PM • James Lumber Center, Grayslake

Beethoven's mythic fire-of-creation Prometheus. A genuinely new discovery for most ears in Louise Farrenc's overture. The wind and sea-spray of Mendelssohn's Hebrides. And Beethoven finding his own voice in his Symphony No. 1.

Three composers, four kinds of discovery.

One of the best parts of a real piano bar night?

The audience helps shape the show.

Request something.
Sing along.
Laugh when somebody asks for something unexpected.
Stay for “just one more song.”

That’s the atmosphere Alyse Merry brings to Piano Bar Classics this Friday night in Gurnee.

Live music.
Cash bar.
Friday Fish Fry.
BBQ.
And a room full of songs people actually know.
