The Himalayas contain thousands of glaciers that act as enormous natural freshwater reservoirs. Their meltwater feeds major river systems including the Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra and Yangtze, supporting agriculture, hydropower and drinking-water supplies across Asia.

The broader Himalayan region supports the water needs of well over 1 billion people, although the frequently quoted figure of 2 billion people directly dependent on Himalayan glacier water depends on how "dependence" is defined.

As temperatures rise, glaciers can initially produce more meltwater, but continued ice loss eventually reduces the amount of stored water available during dry seasons.

The consequences could extend far beyond the mountains: reduced water availability could affect food production, hydropower, cities and migration patterns across South and Central Asia.

At the same time, rapid glacier melt increases the danger of glacial lake outburst floods, where unstable lakes suddenly release enormous volumes of water and debris downstream.
