What happens when live orchestra music meets visual art, creativity, and community?

✨ Paintings Composed ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined Symphony847 on May 23 for an unforgettable evening of music inspired by art. From the powerful sounds of Rachmaninoff’s "Isle of the Dead" to the vibrant creativity shared by audience members sketching throughout the concert, this night became something truly special.

We were honored to share music by incredible composers including Stella Sung and Modest Mussorgsky, brought to life under the direction of Maestro Christopher Ramaekers and our amazing Symphony847 musicians.

And seeing so many audience members create artwork during the performance reminded us exactly why experiences like this matter: music inspires imagination.

Swipe through to see some favorite moments, audience artwork, and reflections from musicians, composers, and concertgoers who helped make this concert such a success. 🎨🎼

Thank you for supporting live orchestra music and for helping us continue to reimagine the symphony experience.

The paintings are nearly complete.

On Monday, Symphony847 gathered for our rehearsal of Paintings Composed, bringing to life music inspired by some of history's most captivating works of art.

Behind every performance is a room full of musicians, countless hours of preparation, and a shared passion for creating something extraordinary.

A boat moves slowly across dark water.

That image became music.

Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead is one of the most haunting orchestral works ever written — inspired by a painting that explores life, death, and what lies between.

It opens Paintings Composed on May 23.

This is not background music.
It’s something you feel unfold in real time.

Before it became one of the most powerful orchestral works ever written, it was an art exhibition.

In 1874, Modest Mussorgsky walked through a memorial exhibition of over 400 works by his friend, the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann.

He didn’t just observe the paintings.
He translated them into music.

Each movement of Pictures at an Exhibition captures a different image:

A grotesque, stumbling gnome
A lone troubadour outside an ancient castle
Children arguing in a garden
A heavy ox cart slowly approaching
A frantic marketplace
Dark underground catacombs
A wild, supernatural chase
And finally — a massive, triumphant city gate

Between them, a recurring “Promenade” theme places you in the gallery — walking from one piece to the next.

What begins as a series of impressions becomes something much larger:
a journey through imagination, memory, and national identity.

And then it ends with The Great Gate of Kiev — one of the most thrilling and monumental finales in all of orchestral music.

This is how Paintings Composed concludes on May 23.

Not quietly.
Not subtly.
But with full orchestral force.

🎟 Experience it live:

What does it mean to “hear” a painting?

On May 23, Symphony847 brings three very different artistic visions to life:

A shadowy journey across dark waters
A deeply human portrait of American life
A vivid musical walk through an art gallery

Each piece begins with a visual idea — and transforms it into sound.

This is not just a concert.
It’s a translation of art across mediums.
