Symphony847 opens its 2026–27 season on Saturday, November 7 at 7:30 PM with Bach and Beyond — a program that starts with Bach's own Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, then hands the material to two living composers before Bach closes the night with the Orchestral Suite No. 2.

It's an evening for anyone who's ever wondered what Bach might sound like through a 21st-century ear.

Last in our intern spotlight series — three people who joined us this spring and quickly became part of how Symphony847 runs behind the scenes.

Intern Spotlight: Seth

Seth came to Symphony847 to get hands-on experience in nonprofit administration, marketing, and community engagement — the machinery that keeps an organization like ours running.

His work touched a lot: sponsor outreach, community partnerships, marketing materials, organizational planning. It's the kind of work that doesn't show up on a program page, but without it, there's no program page.

What he took away: how much collaboration and communication it actually takes to run a nonprofit well — and real experience coordinating projects and community partners to help move our mission forward.

Thank you, Seth, for everything you brought to Symphony847 this season.

Second in our intern spotlight series: meet the people who joined Symphony847 behind the scenes this spring.

Intern Spotlight: Luis

Luis is aiming for a career in music, and he saw this internship as his first real step into the field.

His signature project: bringing the visual concept to life for our May concert, Paintings Composed, where every piece on the program was music inspired by a specific painting — a movement of Pictures at an Exhibition, for instance, paired with the artwork that inspired it. Luis built and ran the slides projected from the control booth to the screen above the orchestra, so as each piece played, the audience could see the exact painting that had inspired it in that moment.

Along the way, he also got hands-on with volunteer coordination, event planning, and concert logistics — the full picture of what it takes to bring a night like that to life.

This is our second year running an intern program at Symphony847 — but until now, we've never introduced our interns here. That changes today. Meet Shia, Luis, and Seth, who joined us this past spring. 🎻

Intern Spotlight: Shia

Shia is a musician himself, and he came to Symphony847 curious about everything that happens before a piece ever reaches the stage.

One project stuck with him: helping prepare the string parts for Rachmaninoff's Isle of the Dead. Music Director Chris Ramaekers determined the bowings — the up-bow and down-bow markings that keep a whole section moving together — and passed them to our orchestra librarian, Dana. Shia worked alongside Dana to copy those bowings into every stand's part, matching Chris's markings exactly across the section. It sounds small. It isn't: it's the difference between a section that plays as one voice and one that doesn't.

"The biggest thing I've learned is how collaborative the work is."

What happens when live orchestra music meets visual art, creativity, and community?

✨ Paintings Composed ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined Symphony847 on May 23 for an unforgettable evening of music inspired by art. From the powerful sounds of Rachmaninoff’s "Isle of the Dead" to the vibrant creativity shared by audience members sketching throughout the concert, this night became something truly special.

We were honored to share music by incredible composers including Stella Sung and Modest Mussorgsky, brought to life under the direction of Maestro Christopher Ramaekers and our amazing Symphony847 musicians.

And seeing so many audience members create artwork during the performance reminded us exactly why experiences like this matter: music inspires imagination.

On Monday, Symphony847 gathered for our rehearsal of Paintings Composed, bringing to life music inspired by some of history's most captivating works of art.

Behind every performance is a room full of musicians, countless hours of preparation, and a shared passion for creating something extraordinary.
