Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster’s first anniversary is celebrated.

To celebrate one year of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, Walt Disney World arranged 80 Corvettes into the shape of the attraction’s iconic guitar logo in the Disney-MGM Studios parking lot. The one-of-a-kind display was a fitting tribute to one of Disney’s fastest and loudest thrill rides.

The Disney Magic is christened.

Disney Cruise Line officially welcomed its very first ship as the Disney Magic was christened in Florida by Patricia Disney, wife of Roy E. Disney. After the traditional champagne bottle ceremony, the ship set sail on a special preview voyage to Disney’s private island before beginning its inaugural cruise two days later.

New Orleans Square opens at Disneyland.

Disneyland welcomed its first new themed land since opening day as New Orleans Square officially debuted. Walt Disney joined New Orleans Mayor Victor Schiro for the ceremony, making it Walt’s final major public appearance in the park. While Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion were still years away, the land’s rich atmosphere immediately became a guest favorite.

Tomorrowland’s Rocket to the Moon gave guests the chance to experience a simulated trip to the Moon years before space travel became reality. Outside, the towering TWA Moonliner became one of Disneyland’s most iconic early landmarks and a symbol of Walt Disney’s optimistic vision of the future.
