This was more than just another vacation in 2005. It was a childhood dream come true.

We visited Magic Kingdom for 1 day, and it was such an amazing experience. While the visit was over 20 year ago, I still remember so many little details about the first time I stepped foot in a Disney park.

When we were boarding the monorail from the TTC, a woman wearing orange flip flops stood in front of us. As she stepped from the platform to the monorail one of them fell directly through the crack between. I don’t know how she handled that, but I fully believe it was karma for thinking flip flops were appropriate theme park attire.

The first ride we did was Stitch’s Great Escape. Afterwards, I immediately asked for a Disney World Tourist Stitch stuffed animal, and I still have him today.

At that point in my life I was very scared of heights and roller coasters. Big Thunder Mountain became the first “real” coaster I had ever ridden, and is still one of my favorites in all of Walt Disney World today.

I had the chance to meet so many characters from my favorite movies and shows. Meeting Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore, Rafiki, Timon, King Louie, and of course, Mickey Mouse made all of the movies come to life in a way like never before.

It was very cold while we were there, too, and we were severely underprepared to the point that we went to Walmart the night before to buy warmer clothes.

Enchanted Tiki Room: Under New Management was running, and I was very confused on my next trip 8 years later when Zazu was not a part of the show. Though, probably for the best if the internet is correct.

We ate dinner at Pecos Bill’s. I distinctly remember all of us eating cheeseburgers. Another shock on a future trip when I wanted that nostalgia factor and was hit with a Tex-Mex menu.

Wishes closed out the night and was the most spectacular fireworks show I had ever seen. That is, until Happily Ever After came along.

That trip opened my eyes to a world of Disney that I had never experienced before, and changed my life forever. And I haven’t looked back since.

Around this time 13 years ago was when Disney became a partial personality trait that has held true for most of my adult life.

As a senior in high school, I had the opportunity to travel with my school’s marching band to Orlando for a truly once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I wasn’t a band kid, but was asked to film their performance in the Celebrate a Dream Come True Parade at Magic Kingdom alongside two of my best friends to this day.

I visited Magic Kingdom previously with my family in 2005, but until then had never experienced any of the other parks Walt Disney World had to offer.

I always loved the movies, music and art of Disney. Hell, it’s what inspired me to find my passion and ultimately pursue a career in the arts from a very young age, so I was naturally, probably extremely annoyingly, excited.

And immediately captivated. The minute we touched down at MCO. Being 18 years old with the freedom to go explore all of the parks without “adult” supervision felt like a dream come true in the moment, even though I was basically already an adult myself. The rides, the food, the smells. All of it. I was hooked.

Since then I’ve been back on 8 separate occasions, including a wild year as an Annual Passholder, and now looking forward to trip number 11 in a few short months.

While the parks (and my sense of style, for that matter) have changed pretty drastically since that 2013 trip, the feeling of turning the corner on Main Street to see the castle still hits me in the feels like it’s the first time I’m experiencing it, and I hope my soon-to-be 2 year old someday understands how much it already means to have the opportunity to share these experiences with him going forward.

And fun fact: I ran into one of the lamp posts in Liberty Square while filming and walking backwards during the parade, the only actual responsibility I had that entire high school trip. But because I was the only one shooting at that leg of the route, we had to keep the shot as the camera angled to the sky in the final cut of our video, and I still laugh about it every time I’ve passed the spot since.

Been rather introspective recently as we plan to take our son to Walt Disney World for the first time. I hope he cherishes the memories that we are going to make and can someday look back on all of the fun I have had sharing my Love of the Mouse with my friends and family over the years. It’s been a wild journey to get where we are today since this little idea came to be back in 2018, but I wouldn’t change any of it for the world.
