BOARD MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Meet Holly Long, our current Vice President. She is originally from Fayetteville, GA, and graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 2006. Leaving Fayetteville for college, Holly attended Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia, graduating in 2010 with a B.A. in Art History. Holly moved to LaGrange as a young adult, starting her career in the non-profit world. Holly sits on our board to ensure the arts remain a relevant part of not only her daughter’s education, but of the education of all local youth. Her favorite outreach program is ‘Super Saturdays,’ an on-going monthly program in partnership with the Junior Service League to provide free art projects every third Saturday of the month to local families. She looks forward to the day her daughter is old enough to attend!

Pictured below is Holly, her husband, and their daughter at the last VAAL opening reception, an annual exhibition where we display works from local artists and members of the Visual Artists Alliance of LaGrange! You can spot Holly all over town: at the American Red Cross, where she serves our community as the executive director, at Hills and Dales, where she serves on their Advisory board, or at Circa, regularly getting coffee with her family.

This past Monday, the Exceptional Way visited us and Mrs. Julie taught the students about Alma Thomas! We completed a project inspired by her artwork. Check out some of their finished works! We always have a blast when they visit the museum! See you next time!

We had a few adult classes that started up in August, but September is really when the adult classes at the museum start rolling! If you see any you're interested in, sign up soon before they're full! Charlie's Oil painting classes start NEXT Wednesday!

Our 8-12 year old classes painted a base color on their paper clay lizards and began painting tropical leaves on top of their black background to create an environment for their lizard. Can't wait to see these finished!

Yesterday, our 4-7 year old artists made collagraphs and printed on top of our primary colored squeegy paintings from last week!

Our 13+ artists finished their value drawings and started Kinusaiga, a Japanese art form of “painting with fabric” or “quilting without thread.” Kinusaiga emerged in Japan in the 80s, attributed to artist Setsu Maeno, who drew inspiration from traditional Japanese Kimekomi (which is a similar art form that is used on 3-D objects, most traditionally, on dolls.)

Joe Sanders was born in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1957. He earned a B.F.A. with distinction from Florida State University in 1981, and an M.F.A. from Arizona State University in 1986, studying under, and with, other prominent printmakers. In 1988, he joined the University of Georgia’s faculty, and for 18 years he taught book-making, printmaking, and papermaking. While at UGA, he developed the Green Street Press letter press facility. In 2006, he returned to Florida State University, helping establish printmaking and research facilities that have since evolved into the Facility for Arts Research (FAR). In 2009, Sanders accepted the position of Alan F. Rothschild Distinguished Chair and Department Chair in the Department of Art at Columbus State University, where he assisted in developing the Bo Bartlett Center facility in the Corn Center for the Visual Arts. He led the development of Animation and Graphic Design programs at CSU, among other initiatives.

Joe Sanders is an artist, printmaker, educator and prominent arts leader whose career has shaped printmaking and visual arts education across the Southeast. Sanders works with a variety of mediums including print, artist’s books, papermaking, non-silver photography, and installation. Current works explore the intersections of science, environment, and natural history. Sanders currently teaches at CSU and remains active within the arts community of Columbus, volunteering, while working in both his Columbus and Dog Island, Florida studios.
