Sometimes, it takes me a long time to get something from idea to concept to a tangible piece. This latest project is no exception.

It took some time, planning, more time, paint, stain, more Quickcrete than I had anticipated, and patience but it's here: the Indian Peaks Lexington Little Free Library! Made from some wood from a reclaimed piano (story below in the pictures), and with some artistic help from my neighbor Christine, this is a piece for our street to be proud of. Placed in our neglected cul-de-sac island, the plan was to have something that wasn't an eyesore. The vegetation does still need some work but this is a good start.

This truly was a labor of love, not just because I wanted to build it, but I am an advocate for lifelong literacy and everything the movement stands for. I hope this inspires people to read more, take an active role in their neighborhoods, and work together for the benefit of all.

One aspect I like about building things is the potential to find unique solutions to unique situations. This is a changing table stand I built for two lovely friends who are expecting their first soon. The husband is very tall and has a history of back issues so changing the little one on a low dresser posed a problem. They reached out to me and asked for a changing table stand to set on top of the dresser that would accommodate his height and hold a changing pad securely. I was flattered they thought of me and accepted the challenging task.

The biggest issue I had was finding good hardwood for the project. Much of what lumber yards sell are pre-milled to certain specs far too small for this unique-sized project. I decided to use some reclaimed wood that I found in larger dimensions and to make the project more environmentally friendly. After stripping and sanding off the old finish (So. Much. Sanding.), I was left with some beautiful wood to work with (I think it's maple but it could be ash). The rise left space underneath for some easy storage, there are rubber feet on the bottom so it won't damage the dresser it will rest on, and it's sanded buttery smooth so the little one won't get any splinters. This project was a lot of fun and I hope it gets lots of good use in the years to come.

Have an idea for a unique wood project? Let me know and we can work together to make something special.

I really didn't market myself this holiday season because I was busy with orders that came in before the season began. And, now that the season has concluded, I feel like I can finally show off the cool pieces I was commissioned too create. Hopefully, I will allow myself some more bandwidth next year so I won't be fighting the clock to get these done and accept more seasonal orders.

Interested in a late holiday gift for someone special or yourself? Let me know and we can work together to create something special.

Holiday orders going through that most important step: clear coat. A painted surface will ruin quickly without protection so every painted caddy I produce has two clear coats applied for a protected and smooth finish that really brings out the detail.

Happy Small Business Saturday! As convenient as it is to buy from the likes of Amazon, they cannot deliver the handmade quality of a product supplied by someone in your own town. So, this Saturday, step away from the online retailers and take a walk down your main street for that unique gift that is sure to be cherished beyond the holiday season.
