The Dark Secret behind "exposure bucks" they don't want you to know!
Artists hear alot about these mysterious and valuble "exposure dollars". Many charities, nonprofits, churches, auctions, and other "worthy causes" operated by people with houses, jobs, 401Ks, giant pickup trucks or nice cars, health care plans and twice yearly vacations seem to run exclusively on exposure dollars when asking perpetually broke, sick, and a bad couple of months away from being homeless, artists for donations of their time, money, and/or artwork.
It doesn't seem to matter that the artists "exposure bank account" is so overflowing with riches that so many of you "worthy causes" a year find us and email out of the blue requesting gratis work for your pet projects. One can never have too much "exposure", amiright?! Over our previous projects and career, when someone has paid us actual USD currency, we also got so much exposure that you know who we are, and then found us, the Artist! And the person after you who finds us and offers money for our work/time/art is also operating off that exposure.
Now, we artists aren't saying we don't like or want the exposure. We love exposure!!!!!!! Exposure gets us new clients who also want to give us money. It's a pretty good system, work = money. I'm sure you operate on a similar system yourself. Now, the real upside to this system is that the things in our lives that require money, like food, clothes, rent, phone service, transportation, art supplies, insurance, medicine, etc., get paid for when people give us money for our work. The downside to the "exposure" model is that landlords, grocery stores, and phone companies so far refuse to accept the extremely valuable "exposure dollars". (those cheapo bastards, amiright? )
Therein lies the Dark Secret of "exposure dollars". When you ask an artist for gratis work for the "exposure", you are in essence asking for their past and future PAYING clients to subsidize your request. To pay your bill. Saying yes, in effect, cuts the Artists paycheck in half. (Doing 2 projects for 1 paycheck is working twice but only getting paid once, it's not rocket surgery, even we lowly artists can do basic math). This is true no matter how "worthy" or "noble" your cause. And an even darker secret? All of you clods out there doing free work for the "exposure" undercuts the rest of us. Why hire real working artists when you hobbiest dopes will do it for free? If you give it away, it's not worth anything. If they want it for free, they don't think it has value. Know your worth. People die from exposure every year, don't be one of the casualties.
