"It was Christmas Eve babe
In the drunk tank
An old man said to me, won't see another one
And then he sang a song
The Rare Old Mountain Dew
I turned my face away
And dreamed about you"

In my email today. As an artist, this is the kind of things you have to put up with. I'm not sure which is worse, that their modus operandi is to scam some of the lowest wage earners in society (us lowly artists) or that this guy is pretending to be handicapped to do it. Lots of naive or desperate artists might fall for this. But do not be deceived, this person is out for one thing only, to take your money away from you. It at first might seem legit, but look at it as a script, tweaked here and there each time. Do not fall for it. See here for examples other people have gotten and an explanation for how the scam works to steal your money. https://karenbjones.com/2022/10/08/scam-alert-for-artists/

On this date in 1968, "The Lion in Winter" was released.

The 1966 Broadway play of the same name had not been a success, getting a bad review in the New York Times and losing $150,000. Producer Martin Poll optioned James Goldman's novel "Waldorf" for the movies. They discussed "The Lion in Winter," which Poll read and loved, and hired Goldman to write a screenplay.

Poll was meant to make a film with Joseph Levine and Peter O'Toole, "The Ski Bum" (which would be written by James Goldman's brother William). That project fell through and Poll suggested they do Lion in Winter instead. O'Toole, who was 36 at the time, portrays Henry II at age 50. He had played the same king as a young man in the film "Becket" just four years earlier.

O'Toole said that his first choice for Eleanor of Aquitaine was Katharine Hepburn, but he was not sure she would do this movie so soon after the death of her long time partner Spencer Tracy. As the only two other actresses he could think of for the part, he mentioned Vivien Leigh and Margaret Rutherford.

Hepburn portrayed her own ancestor. She was descended from Eleanor of Aquitaine in numerous lines, from both Eleanor's marriage to Louis VII, King of France, and Eleanor's marriage to Henry II, King of England.

"The Lion in Winter" marked Anthony Hopkins' debut in a full-length theatrical movie. When young Hopkins expressed anxiety about his performance compared to such established names as O'Toole and Hepburn, Hepburn allegedly advised him, "Don't act. Leave that to me; I act all over the place. You don't need to act. You've got a good face, you've got a good voice, you've got a big body. Watch Spencer Tracy, watch the real American actors that never act, they just do it. Just show up and speak the lines." Hopkins later regarded this as the best acting advice he had ever been given. The Dark Secret behind "exposure bucks" they don't want you to know!
Artists hear alot about these mysterious and valuble "exposure dollars". Many charities, nonprofits, churches, auctions, and other "worthy causes" operated by people with houses, jobs, 401Ks, giant pickup trucks or nice cars, health care plans and twice yearly vacations seem to run exclusively on exposure dollars when asking perpetually broke, sick, and a bad couple of months away from being homeless, artists for donations of their time, money, and/or artwork.

It doesn't seem to matter that the artists "exposure bank account" is so overflowing with riches that so many of you "worthy causes" a year find us and email out of the blue requesting gratis work for your pet projects. One can never have too much "exposure", amiright?! Over our previous projects and career, when someone has paid us actual USD currency, we also got so much exposure that you know who we are, and then found us, the Artist! And the person after you who finds us and offers money for our work/time/art is also operating off that exposure.

Now, we artists aren't saying we don't like or want the exposure. We love exposure!!!!!!! Exposure gets us new clients who also want to give us money. It's a pretty good system, work = money. I'm sure you operate on a similar system yourself. Now, the real upside to this system is that the things in our lives that require money, like food, clothes, rent, phone service, transportation, art supplies, insurance, medicine, etc., get paid for when people give us money for our work. The downside to the "exposure" model is that landlords, grocery stores, and phone companies so far refuse to accept the extremely valuable "exposure dollars". (those cheapo bastards, amiright? )

Therein lies the Dark Secret of "exposure dollars". When you ask an artist for gratis work for the "exposure", you are in essence asking for their past and future PAYING clients to subsidize your request. To pay your bill. Saying yes, in effect, cuts the Artists paycheck in half. (Doing 2 projects for 1 paycheck is working twice but only getting paid once, it's not rocket surgery, even we lowly artists can do basic math). This is true no matter how "worthy" or "noble" your cause. And an even darker secret? All of you clods out there doing free work for the "exposure" undercuts the rest of us. Why hire real working artists when you hobbiest dopes will do it for free? If you give it away, it's not worth anything. If they want it for free, they don't think it has value. Know your worth. People die from exposure every year, don't be one of the casualties.
