From Author Angie Klink: It was an interesting and informative panel discussion titled "Searching for Amelia." This offering, the brainchild of Sease Gerig, brings professionals together for meaninful connections. And connect, we did.

We heard about the upcoming expedition to potentially find Amelia Earhart's Lockheed Electra. As a member of the steering committee for the inaugural Amelia Earhart Festival of Greater Lafayette, Indiana, this shared experience came at the right time as we are beginning our event planning.

We heard from Dr. Richard Pettigrew, Executive Director of the Archaeological Legacy Institute and leader of the expedition; Steven R. Schultz, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Purdue University; and Adriana Molinar, a Purdue student in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering. Molinar is a member of the Indiana 99s, the organization of women pilots that helped to establish. Earhart was the group's first president. The name comes from the original number of members—99.

Pettigrew and Schultz will be on the expedition that leaves October 6.

It's , August 26. In January 1938, after Amelia Earhart's plane went missing in July 1937, the National Woman's Party featured Earhart on the cover of their magazine titled "Equal Rights." Inside, it announced the establishment of a permanent Equal Rights Fund, named in honor of "that dauntless exponent of the principle of equality, who cast her lot with the National Woman's Party in the effort to bring about equal rights under law through the proposed Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) to the Constitution of the United States."

in 1932, Amelia Earhart landed at Newark Airport after taking off from Los Angeles 19 hours and 5 minutes earlier, becoming the first woman pilot to fly coast-to-coast across America nonstop.

By the time Earhart made this flight, breaking barriers was nothing new to her. Only a few months earlier in May of 1932, Earhart had become the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Cross of the French Legion of Honor for the achievement.

Earhart used every record she set as a platform. She lectured across the country, published books about her flights, advocated for the Equal Rights Amendment alongside the National Women’s Party, and helped found the Ninety-Nines, an organization of female aviators dedicated to supporting women in aviation.

She famously said: “Women must try to do things as men have tried. When they fail, the failure must be but a challenge to others.”

Earhart disappeared in 1937 while attempting to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe, but the legacy she left behind in American aviation lives on today.

Yes! Amelia wrote nonfiction books about her flights. Plus, her secret desire was to be a published author of poetry and prose. Her famous poem titled “Courage” was the only one of her many poems that were published. It was also set to music. These aspects of Amelia’s life will be interwoven into the events planned for the first annual Amelia Earhart Festival of Greater Lafayette.
