2027 Retreat Announcement: The Unafraid Storyteller, with John Roedel

All levels are welcome! Beginners and experienced writers equally welcome. Here’s what John has to say about this unique creative retreat experience:

“This retreat is for anyone who has felt something true rise up inside them and not known how to get it onto the page. Over our days together, we will move past the fear of “doing it right” and into the deeper work of writing from the heart ~ the place where grief, wonder, humor, and faith all live at once.

This is not a craft class focused on technique and revision. It is an excavation. Through guided free-writing, structured prompts, contemplative practice, and the safety of a small circle, participants will learn to access the voice they have been quieting.

We will explore how to write honestly about loss and joy, how to let humor walk beside sorrow, and how to trust the first true thing instead of the polished one.

Writers will leave with new work, a renewed relationship with their own voice, and tools to keep writing long after the retreat ends. Participants are treated as fellow travelers. Come as you are ~ no experience required, no perfection expected.

What we love most about this opportunity is the invitation to show up exactly how we are and tell whatever story we want. We’re so excited to see what unfolds. Stay tuned for registration!

If you’re looking for an all levels retreat that blends storytelling, quilting, stitching, and creativity - look no further. Deborah Boschert will be leading an immersive, 5-day retreat at The Estelle Center that invites participants to settle in and tell a meaningful story through creativity.

In this workshop, you’ll look for inspiration in unexpected places, learning to recognize compelling colors, shapes, lines, patterns, and compositions. Students will also explore how inspiration carries deeper layers of meaning and how to translate those into metaphor, narrative, and personal expression as part of the creative process and in the finished works.

Students will create a series of small fabric collages inspired by photos, memories, or experiences. They will also learn printmaking techniques to design original patterns on fabric, adding richness and individuality to their work.

Deborah will share insights on design, composition, and working in a series. Hand embroidery and machine stitching will be used to enhance each piece, as we consider the unique pleasures and challenges of working at a small scale. Collages will be mounted and ready to frame by the end of the workshop so you’ll leave with incredible memories, new skillsets, and a piece of your very own original artwork.

Registration will open soon! Stay tuned or visit our website to sign up for our newsletter.

Valerie Goodwin is coming to The Estelle Center next year, and we couldn’t be more excited! We connected with Valerie at QuiltCon in Raleigh, NC, and are honored that she decided to bring her knowledge and skills to La Veta!

In this mixed media workshop, participants will create layered textile compositions that explore how cut shapes, translucent materials, and stitched marks can build depth, rhythm, and visual tension.

Working with geometric, organic, and map-inspired forms, you will develop a mixed-media surface that shifts between intention and improvisation—where layers partially reveal, conceal, and transform one another.

We will use the Silhouette Cameo to produce precise cut elements, along with a curated set of pre-cut laser shapes for further experimentation. These components will be combined with fabric, collage materials, and hand stitching to build a richly layered composition.

Techniques include electronic and hand-cutting, collage construction, layering strategies, slow stitching, and surface development. Emphasis will be placed on composition, material relationships, and the evolution of a cohesive visual structure.

By the end of the workshop, each participant will complete finished mixed-media textile pieces that reflect an individual visual language shaped through process, layering, and material exploration.

Registration will open soon for this incredible mixed-media workshop! You can visit our website to learn more about The Estelle Center and sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop!

We are so excited to announce that Jane Sassaman is coming back to The Estelle Center in 2027 to teach another quilting retreat!

“Leaves in the Breeze” is a 5-day quilting extravaganza with a lovely nod to autumn. In this class each student will get the pack of patterns and set about designing their own unique quilt top using Appliqué Sassaman Style. One of our favorite ways to quilt, but we might be a little biased.

Stay tuned for registration and more details!

La Veta isn’t the Colorado you’ve seen on postcards. Tucked into the Spanish Peaks in the southern part of the state, it’s a world away from the crowded ski towns and traffic-choked exits of the I-70 corridor. There are no chairlifts here, no luxury outlet malls, no lines. Just a small, sleepy mountain town with dirt roads, old brick storefronts, and locals who still wave from their porches.

La Veta is the Colorado that existed before Colorado became a brand: quiet, a little wild, and completely unbothered by trends. It’s the kind of place that doesn’t ask anything of you except to slow down.

Join Karla Overland of Cherrywood Fabrics and Elaine Poplin of Messygoat Sews for a four-day retreat that will transform how you see color and texture.

This is a deep dive into the world of hand-dyed fabric, stained-glass effects, and mark-making. You’ll discover that solid fabrics are so much more than just solids, exploring their hidden richness through color theory, transparency, and hands-on experimentation.

Karla kicks off the week with her Deconstructed Color Theory presentation. Elaine guides you through her stained-glass techniques to design and build your own piece with no complex piecing. Then you’ll bring it all together into a wearable masterpiece or an art quilt to display.

Kick things off Monday, August 24th at 5:30 pm with a Meet & Greet. Register here: https://estellecreativearts.com/knitting-quilting-retreats/color-camp-colorado-karla-overland-elaine-poplin
