Year of the Women Farmer: Cindy Bliss of Zekiah Ridge Farm & Flowers
2026 is the International Year of the Woman Farmer, and this month we’re celebrating Cindy Bliss of Zekiah Ridge Farm and Flowers in La Plata, a local farmer and entrepreneur helping carry on the agricultural legacy of her family’s Charles County farm.
Zekiah Ridge is a historic farm with roots in to***co production. Today, Cindy has found creative ways to preserve the farm’s history and bring new life to the property.
Cindy transformed one of the farm’s historic to***co barns into Bliss in the Barn, a beautiful event venue. In 2020, she and her family added another crop that has become a big part of what the farm is now known for: flowers. Zekiah Ridge Farm & Flowers now grows a variety of locally grown blooms, including peonies, dahlias, sunflowers, zinnias and more in three hoop houses.
Cindy’s connection to flowers also inspired Veterans Bloom, a nonprofit focused on supporting veterans through the healing and community-building power of flowers. She also serves as the head of the Legislative Committee for the Charles County Farm Bureau, advocating for the farmers and agricultural community she is so passionate about.
On any given day, you might find Cindy out in her hoop houses, fixing a tractor, building a sign for the local Farm Bureau chapter, or advocating for our local farmers at the state and local level. Her energy is unmatched and deeply appreciated.
Cindy’s story is a wonderful example of how women in agriculture are preserving tradition, embracing new opportunities and finding innovative ways to keep farms connected to their communities.
